2025 GWM Tank 300 updated in Thailand with new 2.4L turbodiesel powertrain

GWM has introduced new diesel variants of the GWM Tank 300 in Thailand during the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show, held from March 26 to April 6, 2025. This marks a significant development for the offroader in the Kingdom, as it was previously only available with a hybrid powertrain.

Headlight Magazine reports that the addition of the diesel powertrains brings the total number of GWM Tank 300 variants sold in Thailand to four. These variants are: Diesel PRO 2WD, Diesel ULTRA 2WD, Diesel ULTRA 4WD, and HEV ULTRA AWD. There, prices for the Tank 300 range from THB999,000 (approx. RM130k) to THB1.449 million (approx. RM189k).

The newly introduced diesel powertrain features a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, delivering 184 hp and 480 Nm of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission, with drivetrain configurations in either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or part-time four-wheel drive (4WD).

This powertrain joins the existing hybrid (HEV) variant offered in Thailand. The hybrid (HEV) variant offered in Thailand uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 244 hp and 380 Nm. This is then paired to an electric motor making 106 hp and 268 Nm and a 1.7 kWh battery pack. The combined output of the HEV powertrain is 350 hp and 616 Nm, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD drivetrain.

It’s worth noting that these powertrains differ from those in China, where the Tank 300 has been updated to offer more powerful options.

In China, the petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 227 hp and 387 Nm. The diesel variant there has 186 hp and 480 Nm from a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, while the HEV variant in China has a combined output of 408 hp and 750 Nm from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor setup.

The GWM Tank 300’s exterior in Thailand largely retains its signature macho off-roader design. A key distinction between the diesel and HEV variants is that the diesel models do not include roof rails, while the HEV variants do. Additional exterior features include 17-inch alloy wheels with A/T tyres, alongside black finishes for the side mirrors, door steps, and roof rails.

Inside, both variants feature a G-Wagon-esque interior, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster for the driver, similar to the Malaysian-spec GWM Tank 300.

It’s unclear if GWM will offer the diesel powertrain for the Tank 300 in Malaysia. Diesel subsidies have been removed, which significantly raises the cost of ownership due to high fuel prices, making its local introduction questionable.

However, the HEV powertrain could make a Malaysia debut. Given that the Tank 300 is fully imported (CBU) from China, we might get the updated version with 408 hp and 750 Nm, instead of the less powerful configuration currently available in Thailand.
