After its public preview at the 2024 Malaysia Auto Show, GWM Malaysia has now officially launched the Tank 300 here on our shores as a fully imported (CBU) model, priced at RM250,000 on-the-road and without insurance.
Deliveries for the GWM Tank 300 is scheduled to begin later this month, after the first batch of vehicles arrived at Port Klang last month.
Billed as a “luxury off-road SUV”, the GWM Tank 300 occupies a fairly unique position in the market, as it’s built on a hardy ladder frame chassis to handle the abuse from rougher terrains. The only true competitor on the market currently is the Ford Everest, though that car is roughly 200 mm longer than the Tank 300 (but 7 mm narrower and 61 mm lower), and is powered by a diesel mill.
The GWM Tank 300 meanwhile gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, capable of delivering 220 hp and 380 Nm. Drive is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a part-time four-wheel drive system (2H, 4H, 4L electronically selectable).
To help with off-road performance, the GWM Tank 300 also comes with two individual differential locks, one each on both axles, alongside a whole bunch of electronic smarts, including the All-terrain Progress Control System drive mode programmes, Crawl Control, as well as something called Tank Turn Assist that uses the brakes to lock the inside wheel, making it easier to rotate around tight spaces off-road.
As for the more traditional off-road features, the GWM Tank 300 boasts a 33-degree approach angle, 34-degree departure angle, and a ground clearance of 224 mm. Water wading can also be done up to a depth of 700 mm, and unofficially slightly more due to smart placements for its electronics and air intakes.

Features wise, the GWM Tank 300 in Malaysia comes equipped as standard with LED headlights and tail lights, LED daytime-running lights, heavy-duty bumpers and wheel arches, skid plates, side steps, and 18-inch wheels with a full-sized spare mounted on the tailgate.
In stark contrast to its rugged exterior, the Tank 300’s interior focuses more on luxuries, with a modern and plush cabin highlighted by the powered front seats (8-way with additional 4-way lumbar support for driver seat; 4-way for front passenger) with seat ventilation, twin 12.3-inch displays with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a nine-speaker Infinity sound system, a wireless charging pad, double-glazed glass for the windshield and front doors, 64-colour ambient lighting, as well as a sunroof above.
The GWM Tank 300 also comes equipped with an extensive list of advanced driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist for the SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities, front and rear autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assistance, lane change assist, as well as GWM’s signature Wisdom Dodge system that automatically distances itself from large lorries on the road.
As part of its launch promotions, GWM Malaysia will be offering the first 300 customers of the Tank 300 a lifetime engine and transmission warranty (limited to first owner only), a Thule adventure kit worth RM8,999, five years of free service maintenance inclusive of labour and parts, as well as a chance to win an “adventure trip”. Otherwise, the GWM Tank 300 is covered by a standard six-year unlimited mileage warranty.
