GWM Ora 5 HEV previewed in Malaysia – first hybrid under Ora sub-brand with over 1,100 km range.

Yup, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. While it may look like a taller version of the Good Cat, this is actually the GWM Ora 5 HEV. Making its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2026, it marks the first model under the Ora sub-brand to feature an internal combustion engine (ICE).

While many might associate it with the Good Cat on first glance, it is quite significantly bigger. The GWM Ora 5 measures 4,471 mm in length, 1,833 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm — putting it more in line with cars such as the BYD Atto 3 and the Leapmotor B10.

The Ora 5 retains the brand’s signature “Cat Family” design language, characterised by its waterdrop-shaped headlights, full-width rear light bar, and retro-futuristic proportions. However, to better suit its larger footprint and more SUV-oriented positioning, it features more sculpted front and rear bumpers, along with more pronounced rear haunches that give it a bolder stance.

Additional SUV-inspired touches include a set of roof rails and 18-inch four-spoke petal-style low-drag alloy wheels.  According to GWM, the Ora 5 was awarded the “Design of the Year” title at the 2025 London Design Awards, becoming the world’s first production vehicle to receive this recognition.

Inside, the Ora 5 marks a significant departure from its smaller Good Cat sibling. The dashboard adopts a more contemporary layout, headlined by a large floating infotainment display paired with a letterbox-style digital instrument cluster.

The centre console is now connected to the dashboard, creating a bridge-like design that accommodates cup holders, a wireless charging pad, and additional storage space beneath. Thankfully, the row of physical climate control buttons remains, providing quick access to key functions without having to rely solely on the touchscreen.

Based on the specification offered in Thailand, the infotainment and instrument displays measure 14.6 inches and 10.25 inches, respectively. Other available features include a 50 W wireless charger, a nine-speaker audio system, power-adjustable front seats with memory functions, and leather upholstery.

Underpinning the Ora 5 is GWM’s new GWM One platform, a flexible architecture designed to support multiple powertrain configurations, including fully electric (EV) and hybrid (HEV) applications. In the model previewed here, power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), a 1.09 kWh battery pack, and GWM’s latest Hi2 hybrid system. Combined outputs stand at 223 hp and 476 Nm, with drive sent exclusively to the front wheels.

In GWM’s terminology, “Hi2” stands for Hybrid Intelligent 2WD, with the “2” signifying its front-wheel-drive layout. This differs from the company’s Hi4 system, as found in the GWM Wey G9, where power is distributed to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive setup.

The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.7 seconds, while fuel consumption is rated at just 4.4 litres per 100 km for a claimed driving range of up to 1,100 km. Notably, GWM mentioned that the model also earned a Guinness World Record title for the lowest fuel consumption by a production hybrid SUV driving across municipalities in China, recording an average of just 3.74 litres per 100 km over a 3,004 km real-world endurance drive.

As for safety, GWM Malaysia has yet to confirm the Ora 5’s full equipment list. However, taking the Thai-market model as a reference again, the crossover is expected to come equipped with GWM’s suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keeping assist, and more.

While a local launch timeline has yet to be announced, GWM Malaysia has confirmed that the Ora 5 is destined for our market. Pricing also remains under wraps for now, although it is expected to sit above the existing Ora Good Cat range, which is currently priced from RM109,800 for the Ultra and RM119,800 for the GT.
