BMW Group smashes own sales record, global leader in premium segment with 2.5 mil. sales

The numbers are in with BMW Group announcing fantastic sales results for 2021. The Munich-based company posted sales of 2.52 million vehicles which represented a 8.4% growth versus the year before.

BMW Group, which consists of the namesake brand as well as MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars saw record sales numbers, with the latter seeing some 48% growth with 5,586 units. It is the marque’s highest sales in its 117-year history. The past year was characterised by high demand worldwide for all models, particularly Ghost and Cullinan and all Black Badge variants, with current orders extending well into the third quarter of 2022.

The BMW brand ended 2021 with global sales up 9.1% (to 2,213,795 vehicles) on the previous year and surpasses its previous record of 2.168 million units. Compared to arch-rival Mercedes-Benz, last year’s performance by BMW was circa 120,00 units better than the 2,093,476 units by Team Stuttgart; a total itself representing a 5% decline compared to 2020.

The BMW M performance brand also continues to see growth, as well as pull further ahead of Mercedes-Benz’ AMG brand. Both performance brands saw growth, with BMW seeing sales of 163,542 M vehicles (+13.4%), while Mercedes-AMG delivered 145,979 units (or 16.7% growth).

Growth came mainly from the new BMW 4 Series models, and in particular the coupe variant. BMW also said the M3 and M4 performed especially well and the large BMW X5 M and X6 M sales also saw large growth. Expect figures to surge this year too, as the BMW M brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with more models.

The MINI brand also saw sales growth of 3.3% to end the year with 302,144 units, more than 10% or 34,851 units comprise of the MINI Cooper Electric. MINI had its highest sales of over 360,000 units back in 2017.

Combining all the electrified vehicles from BMW and MINI, the group moved a total of 328,316 units which represented a massive 70% growth! This figure is expected to grow even larger thanks to the introduction of the new BMW i models such as the i4, iX and iX3 as well as the upcoming i7 large sedan and X1 compact SUV.

Locally, 2022 is going to be a busy year for BMW Malaysia, as the company gears up for the introduction of the aforementioned BMW i models, as well as the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.
