Smart Malaysia has announced that the Smart #1 recently clinched third place in terms of sales in the EV SUV category here in Malaysia, specifically for premium models above the RM180k price point, making it one of the “most preferred premium EVs in Malaysia”.
The press release did not provide any detailed sales figure breakdown, but a Smart Malaysia spokesperson said that the third position is based on the year-to-date sales volume until February this year.
The Smart #1’s impressive performance rides on the recent boom in the Malaysian EV market, which saw an exponential growth in sales volume surging from 3,079 units in 2022 to 11,624 units in 2023, representing an increase in market share from 0.43% to 1.45% on the nation’s total industry volume (TIV).
Speaking on the achievement, Smart Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang said, “This milestone reflects the growing demand for urban mobility solutions in the region and reaffirms smart’s goal to position itself as a leader in the premium EV segment.”
The Smart #1 has received a warm welcome from Malaysians ever since it officially debuted on our shores late last year. The compact EV crossover recorded 100 bookings in just one month, which the company said set a new sales record in the country, later reaching 1,000 bookings in a little over three months.
Offered in three variants (Pro, Premium, and Brabus) with prices ranging from RM189,000 to RM249,000, the Smart #1 offers a unique blend of style and practicality, the latter demonstrated by the feature-rich mobile companion app that even integrates a nationwide charging map with payment capabilities.
The entry-level Pro variant only just begun deliveries in Malaysia last month. Aside from selling its cars, Smart Malaysia has also been expanding its dealer network across Malaysia to now 13 locations nationwide, including its first-ever “community-centric hub” in East Malaysia.
