Proton returns to Trinidad and Tobago, launches X50 & X90 SUVs



Proton recently made its return to Trinidad and Tobago, specifically on March 13, 2024. The carmaker launched two models, the Proton X50 and Proton X90 in the market, with Ansa Motors being the official importer and distributor for Proton vehicles in the country.

Speaking at the launch event, Ansa Motors Head of Regional Business, Jerome Borde praised Proton for its focus on safety, reliability, and competitive pricing in Trinidad and Tobago’s automotive market. Aside from Proton, Ansa Motors also represents other automotive brands including Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford, Mitsubishi, and Honda in the country.

Proton CEO, Roslan Abdullah said, “The addition of the Proton X50 and Proton X90 to the lineup in Trinidad and Tobago will help boost demand and brand visibility in the West Indies nation. It is another step in Proton’s export sales growth efforts as we look to raise the contribution of export sales to our annual sales volume.”

Aside from Trinidad and Tobago, Proton currently exports its vehicles to markets including South Africa, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq, and many more. Proton is also aiming to return to neighbouring markets like Thailand and Indonesia.

Originally launched in Malaysia in 2020, the Proton X50 is the national carmaker’s second SUV model. Offered in four variants, prices for the X50 start from RM86,300.

The X50 comes in two powertrain options. This includes the 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder MPI engine and 7-speed DCT gearbox combo that makes 150 hp (metric) and 226 Nm, which powers the Standard, Executive, and Premium variants.

The top-spec Flagship variant gets the more powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder TGDi engine, producing 177 hp (metric) and 255 Nm. Also paired to the same 7-speed DCT, power is sent to the front wheels only with both engines.

The Proton X90, launched in Malaysia in 2023, is Proton’s third SUV model and also its first electrified vehicle. With prices starting from RM123,800, all three variants of the SUV feature that same 48V mild hybrid powertrain, featuring a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder TGDI engine and a Belt Starter Generator (BSG), putting a system output of 190 hp (metric) and 300 Nm.
