Proton Saga Cross spied testing in camouflage – launch this year with HEV powertrain?

A couple of images shared by Threads user figrant11 have been circulating on the social media platform, showing a heavily camouflaged car undergoing road tests on the twisty roads of Genting Highlands. It appears to be a small crossover, with a rear end that looks strikingly similar to the Proton Saga, suggesting it could be the much-rumoured crossover sibling to the sedan, likely to be called the Proton Saga Cross.

Proton first confirmed its Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) roadmap during last year’s Proton Tech Showcase, revealing plans for three new models based on the platform: two SUVs (codenamed AMA02 and AMA05) and one MPV (AMA06). With the fourth-generation MC3 Proton Saga debuting as the first AMA-based model (codenamed AMA01), this crossover should be its SUV counterpart, bearing the AMA02 codename.

The upcoming crossover is expected to use the same BHE15 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine found in the fourth-generation (MC3) Proton Saga, producing up to 120 hp and 150 Nm. Unlike the Saga’s Premium variant, which uses a CVT, the crossover is expected to pair the engine with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. However, it’s also suggested that a hybrid variant could join the lineup later on.

That possibility stems from Proton’s own announcements. During last year’s Proton Tech Showcase, the company confirmed that one of its upcoming AMA-based SUVs will receive its new Dedicated Hybrid Engine (DHE) paired with its transmission called DHT120 — likely indicating its power output of 120 kW (163hp). This was then showcased at the recent Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2026.

The Dedicated Hybrid Engine is derived from the BHE15 1.5-litre engine used in the Proton Saga, operating on a full Atkinson cycle with a high 14:1 compression ratio. On its own, the engine produces 111 hp and 136 Nm. When paired with the Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), the series-parallel hybrid system combines for 113 kW (154 hp) and 220 Nm.

The hybrid system supports multiple operating modes, including Series, Parallel, Direct Drive and full EV operation. According to Proton, it is also engineered to meet China 6b and Euro 6d emissions standards.

Proton has also confirmed that both the DHE and DHT will be manufactured locally at its Tanjung Malim plant in Perak. More importantly, the company says the new series-parallel hybrid powertrain is “set to debut on an upcoming model soon”. Coupled with Proton’s earlier confirmation that the AMA02 SUV is slated for launch this year, speculation is that the rumoured Saga Cross could be coming sooner rather than later!
