Proton confirms its EV will debut by 2025, X70 facelift to launch soon

During a recent media event, Proton Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah confirmed that Proton will debut its own EV by 2025. He also confirmed that Proton will be launching a “facelifted SUV” soon, which is highly likely the new Proton X70 facelift.

Proton’s commitment to making its own EV by 2025 is in response to MITI’s encouragement for our local carmakers to produce EVs by 2025. Although Proton already distributes the all-electric Smart #1 via its Pro-Net subsidiary, for 2025, the company will be producing its own electric cars under the Proton brand.

Proton Iriz EV concept

Proton’s electric car for 2025 will likely be sharing technology with Geely, and as of now, the possibilities of what model it would be based/developed on is endless, looking at Geely’s current EV catalogue.

Besides, the upcoming Proton EV, what Malaysians could look forward to is the upcoming launch of the facelifted Proton X70. Although mentioned as a “facelifted SUV’ only by the Deputy CEO, the Proton X70 is likely what will debut first as the C-segment SUV has been around for quite a while now. Spyshots of the camouflaged Proton X70 has also been circulating the internet.

There is also a chance of the “facelifted SUV” being the Proton X50 facelift, but comparing the ages of both cars in the market, the Proton X70 is more in need of a facelift. A model update was given to the X70 in 2022, and the SUV is currently sold in 6 variants – 1.5 TGDI Standard 2WD, 1.5 TGDI Executive 2WD, 1.5 TGDI Executive AWD, 1.5 TGDI Premium 2WD, 1.5 Premium X 2WD, and 1.8 TGDI Premium 2WD.

Prices of the Proton X70 in Malaysia currently range from RM98,800 to RM126,800. With the facelift launching soon, do expect to see a price bump.
