UMWT: No recalls for Toyota Vios amidst Daihatsu safety “procedural irregularity”

Amidst the Daihatsu safety scandal, one Toyota model that it affects is the all-new Toyota Vios (also known as the Yaris Ativ in other markets). Besides the Vios, the Toyota Agya and all-new Perodua Axia are also concerned. The scandal is a “procedural irregularity” which involves modification to the driver door to improve performance in the side impact test.

Today, UMW Toyota Motor has released an official statement regarding the matter, assuring its customers that the all-new Toyota Vios has no issues with the safety standards and that deliveries will continue as usual.

UMW Toyota Motor President, Datuk Ravindran K. said, “For customers who have booked their All-New Toyota Vios or are interested in purchasing it, we would like to assure you that the All-New Toyota Vios model complies with all safety regulations and there is no compromise to the quality of the vehicles.”

This follows the statement released by Daihatsu Co Ltd. on 28 April 2023 highlighting a procedural irregularity on the testing of four models, one of which includes the All-New Toyota Vios. Subsequent testing has validated that the vehicle meets the UN-R95 certification and there is no need for the Toyota Vios to be recalled as sales of the vehicle continues without disruption.

“We sincerely apologise for any distress caused to our customers and we wish to assure everyone of the safety and quality of our vehicles. Our commitment to our customers’ safety has always been and remains our topmost in our priority”, he added.

Toyota Chairman of the Board, Akio Toyoda has also released an official statement regarding the matter. He said, “Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.’s wrongdoing is a matter that concerns safety, which is the most important aspect of vehicles. We consider this an absolutely unacceptable act that betrays the trust of our customers. We would like to sincerely apologize to our customers around the world and all related parties for the inconvenience and concern this has caused.”
