Apple Music is landing in Volvo cars with an upcoming OTA update

Volvo Cars is finally bringing Apple Music natively to its Android-based infotainment systems. The streaming service will be rolled out to more than two million compatible Volvo cars worldwide through an upcoming over-the-air (OTA) software update, or directly from the factory on new cars such as the Volvo EX60, which is set to begin deliveries in the coming months.

Once Apple Music is available in the system, drivers can simply sign in with their Apple Account and start listening to their existing library, playlists and recommendations straight from the car.

Drivers of the EX60, EX90 and ES90 equipped with the optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system will also be able to enjoy Apple Music in Spatial Audio. Powered by Dolby Atmos, it features a more immersive surround sound audio experience.

The update will be coming to the Volvo EX90, ES90, XC90, S90, V90, XC60, S60, V60, XC40, EX40 and EC40, from model year 2020 and onwards. It will be a staggered rollout depending on the car model, although no specific timeline has been provided.

To commemorate the rollout, Volvo is also offering eligible owners up to three months of Apple Music at no extra cost, giving them the chance to try out the service and explore everything it has to offer. Valid until 6 July 2027, the offer is redeemable from the Volo cars app. Already got a huge library in Spotify or Tidal? New Apple Music subscribers can also transfer their music library over. Volvo Cars Head of Global Software Engineering, Alwin Bakkenes, said, “Many of our customers use Apple Music on their phones or in their homes today. By bringing Apple Music directly into our cars, we’re making them an extraordinary place to experience music.”

“You’ll feel as if you’re right in the middle of a concert hall or an arena during your favourite live performance or immersed in the latest music in Spatial Audio exactly as the artist intended — a truly emotional listening experience,” he added.
