Xiaomi’s new sub-brand might be called Sky Nomad, focused on range extender SUVs

Xioami Auto, has officially unveiled Sky Nomad in their social media pages.  Describing it as “a new name about space and life”, the company hasn’t explained exactly what Sky Nomad represents. However, it is widely believed to be a new sub-brand focused on larger SUVs with hybridised powertrains.

This follows earlier reports that Xiaomi Auto was planning to launch a separate brand dedicated to hybrid-powered SUVs, distinct from its existing Xiaomi lineup, which currently focuses on high-performance, tech-centric battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

According to reports from CarNewsChina, the first model under the Sky Nomad sub-brand will be called the N90. It is expected to be a full-sized SUV powered by an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain. The report also claims the N90 will measure around 5.3 metres in length, ride on a 3.1-metre wheelbase, and is expected to be offered in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

The N90 is also expected to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine serving primarily as a generator in its EREV powertrain. It is reportedly equipped with a 70 kWh battery, providing between 400 km and 500 km of pure electric driving range. Combined, the SUV is said to offer a total driving range of up to 1,500 km.

Images shared online by Weibo user Cengzi Yan (曾子言) show the SUV’s full-size proportions, with an upright front and rear profile. Beneath the camouflage, a ladder-like attachment can also be seen on the D-pillars, reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender. The prototype rides on large alloy wheels fitted with road-biased tyres, suggesting it is being developed as a luxury-focused urban SUV rather than a hardcore off-roader.

While Sky Nomad is still in the early stages, Chinese media expect its first model to be priced between RMB200,000 (approx. RM120k) and RMB400,000 (approx. RM240k). This would put it up against rivals such as the Li Auto L8, Huawei’s Aito M7, and potentially even Chery Jaguar Land Rover’s upcoming Freelander 8.
