Perodua: No recalls for Perodua Axia despite Daihatsu safety scandal, deliveries unaffected

Owners of the new 2023 Perodua Axia may have had a little scare over the recent long weekend with Daihatsu admitting to “procedural irregularities” in its safety testing. Also affecting the Toyota Vios (Yaris Ativ) and Agya, apparently some modifications were made to the driver door to improve performance in the side impact testing.

Commenting on the issue, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, “Perodua engaged Daihatsu Co Ltd to carry out safety testing for the new Perodua Axia in Japan, which was witnessed by relevant authorities and agencies for their respective assessment. As we receive news of this “procedural irregularity” by Daihatsu, we immediately contacted these bodies to determine if the safety standard of the Perodua Axia was compromised.”

“We were assured that despite the revelation by Daihatsu, the UN-R95 certification given to the Perodua Axia is intact. This means that the Perodua Axia is safe for driving and no recall will be issued nor will Perodua stop delivery of this new model to our valued customers. We apologise for any distress caused to our customers on this matter and we wish to assure that the safety information and specification of all our models are verified by professional bodies.”

“We will continue to monitor this situation and will update the public on this matter as it develops. We place our customers safety and comfort above all else and we will continue to do so as part of our practice of Going Beyond of what is expected.”

Just to recap, owners of the new Perodua Axia 2023 will not have to worry about any recalls. Deliveries of the all-new Perodua Axia will also carry on as usual.

Daihatsu’s announcement regarding the issue came about on April 28 and since then, Toyota Chairman of the Board, Akio Toyoda has released his official statement regarding the matter. He said, “Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.’s wrongdoing is a matter that concerns safety, which is the most important aspect of vehicles. We consider this an absolutely unacceptable act that betrays the trust of our customers. We would like to sincerely apologize to our customers around the world and all related parties for the inconvenience and concern this has caused.”
