Audi Q6 e-tron: Coming to Malaysia soon, production of EV motor begins

Audi Q6 e-tron Prototype

Audi Malaysia has previously confirmed that the Audi Q6 e-tron will be launched in Malaysia in 2024, and there’s good news for those of you who are looking forward to this all-electric model from Ingolstadt. Production of its electric motor (which is shared with the upcoming Porsche Macan EV) has begun in Audi’s plant in Győr, Hungary.

Currently already in the Malaysian market is Audi’s e-tron GT and Q8 e-tron range which both were launched at the same time this year. The upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron has not even been properly revealed to the world just yet but we do know that it will be built on the Premium Performance Electric (PPE) platform that is jointly developed by Audi and Porsche. The PPE platform is an 800V platform that is also the basis for the upcoming Porsche Macan EV.

In Győr, Hungary, around 700 Audi employees manufacture electric motors for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Pictured: drive assembly

The production of the Q6 e-tron’s electric motor has required Audi to install 3 new lines at its Győr plant. The production line for stators has 28 work steps, the one for transmission components has 15. One axle alone requires 190 individual steps to assemble. Around 700 employees are involved in production. In terms of series production, the employees in Győr work in three shifts to build up to 2,000 electric motors per day for the PPE.

Audi CEO, Gernot Döllner said, “Győr is predestined for the production of these highly compact and efficient electric motors for the PPE. The highly qualified team at the site has already built over 400,000 electric drive systems since 2018, which is invaluable experience.”

Audi Q6 e-tron Prototype

So far, Audi has revealed the “Audi Q6 e-tron Prototype” which looks pretty much production-ready, albeit with red and purple livery. Audi has also given us a glimpse of the Q6 e-tron’s interior, showcasing a 3-screen display layout.

What we can say so far is that the interior isn’t too experimental as it remains rather grounded with current design trends. Design aside, Audi has released technical posters of the Q6 e-tron’s headlight technology, its advanced safety systems, as well as its customizable digital light signatures.

Audi Board Member for Production and Logistics, Gerd Walker said, “The start of production in Győr marks an important milestone in the ramp-up of production of the Audi Q6 e-tron. I know from personal experience how passionately the team at Audi Hungaria works and how systematically it advances the further electrification of the world’s largest engine plant. With its enormous expertise in drive systems and net carbon neutral production, the Győr site is an indispensable part of Audi’s global production network.”
