Mitsubishi Xpander still the best-selling non-national MPV in Malaysia, 3 years in a row

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has sold 11,384 units of the Xpander in its Financial Year 2023 (FY23; April 2023–March 2024), which meant that the model has retained the title of the best-selling non-national MPV for the third year in a row, edging out newer rivals such as the Toyota Veloz.

The Mitsubishi Triton also continued its positive performance in FY23 with 8,636 units sold, cementing its position within the “top two spot” in the double-cab pick-up truck segment. Together, the Xpander and Triton has helped Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia retain its “top three non-national brand” status here in Malaysia. That said, the total sales figure (20,020 units) still represents a 4,295 units (17.6%) drop from last year.

Speaking on the brand’s robust performance in FY23, MMM CEO, Shinya Ikeda said, “We are thrilled to witness the Xpander’s continued dominance in Malaysia. This achievement is a testament to our commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles that resonate with the needs and preferences of Malaysian customers. The No. 1 spot also highlights that the Xpander is the preferred choice among Malaysian families seeking a versatile MPV.”

“Looking ahead to 2024, Mitsubishi Motors is continuously initiating changes for the better and an ownership experience of the highest standards. We are excited to keep moving forward and appreciate all our customers for their faithful support of the Mitsubishi brand,” Ikeda added.

The Mitsubishi Xpander has been recently updated in Thailand, introducing a new e:MOTION hybrid powertrain to the seven-seater family MPV. The hybrid powertrain combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 116 hp and 255 Nm, with power sent to the front wheels only.

Here in Malaysia, the Mitsubishi Xpander is still powered by the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four engine, making 105 hp and 141 Nm of torque. However, it’s likely that an update will be arriving soon on our shores, possibly with a new CVT gearbox or even a new powertrain option, given that it has been more than three years since the model made its debut here in Malaysia.

Ditto the Triton, where an all-new generation model has recently been introduced by Mitsubishi Motors globally. Keep your eyes peeled!
