GWM Tank 300 previewed in Malaysia, retro-esque SUV launching Q3 2024

Aside from just previewing the soon-to-be-launched Ora 07 all-electric sedan, Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia has given us a surprise by showcasing the Tank 300 in Malaysia for the first time. This is ahead of the SUV’s Malaysian market launch which is set to happen in Q3 this year (2024).

Looking at the Tank 300, we can’t help but be reminded of other retro-inspired SUVs such as the Jeep Wrangler and the Suzuki Jimny. Despite its retro style, the Tank 300’s specs aren’t retro at all, including the one previewed here in Malaysia.

On the outside, the Tank 300 previewed here in Malaysia is equipped with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and a striking set of LED rearlights. It also carries a rear tailgate-mounted spare tyre for a rugged look.

The SUV’s rugged looks continue inside with an array of chunky buttons, along with a chunky steering wheel and gear selector. The Tank 300 previewed here in Malaysia also sports a set of 12.3-inch digital instrument and touchscreen instrument displays, a wireless charging pad, powered front seats, paddle shifters, and a Harman Infinity sound system among other things. Overall, the Tank 300’s interior feels rugged and premium at the same time, and looks relatively stylish too.

In its home market, China, the Tank 300 is available with two powertrain options. This includes the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, pushing out 220 hp and 380 Nm. There is also a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a 48V petrol mild-hybrid option that is known as the “Time Traveller”. This setup is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, pushing out 245 hp and 380 Nm.

Pricing-wise, the entry-level Tank 300, known as the “Challenger” costs 199,800 yuan (approx. RM131,248), while the “Conqueror” variant can be had at 216,800 yuan (approx. RM142,415). The top-of-the-line “Time Traveller” variant is priced at 226,800 yuan (approx. RM148,984). As mentioned above, the Tank 300 will be making its launch in Malaysia in Q3 this year. With that, is the Tank 300’s stylish looks enough to make you consider it over its Japanese, Continental, or even Korean competitors?
