GWM Ora 07 teased in Malaysia – bringing the fight to the BYD Seal?

Not letting the BYD Seal take all the limelight, GWM Malaysia today also published a teaser for the Ora 07 on its social media pages, hinting at an imminent launch on our shores.

Of course, the Ora 07 – previously known as the Lightning Cat – has long been rumoured for a Malaysian launch. A source close to the matter told AutoBuzz back in April last year that the EV fastback sedan will be priced at around the RM200k mark, although we presume that has now been changed, considering the Tesla Model 3’s sticker price.

For some context, the Ora 07 was recently launched in Thailand with two variants – Long Range and Performance – available on offer starting at THB1.299 million (approx. RM172k).

The BYD Seal, on the other hand, starts from THB1.325 million (approx. RM169k) in the Kingdom, although the more comparably-spec’d Premium Long Range variant is priced at THB1.599 million (approx. RM204k) – which is also exactly the same as the Tesla Model 3’s starting price.

Back to the Ora 07 – both the Long Range and Performance variants are powered by the same 83.5 kWh battery pack, although the former only gets a single electric motor on the front axle with 204 hp and 340 Nm, while the Performance sports an additional motor on the rear axle to double its output up to 408 hp and 680 Nm – enough for a century sprint in under 4.3 seconds, GWM says.

Because of its single motor set up, the Ora 07 Long Range boasts a longer electric range at up to 640 km (NEDC) in a single charge, while the Performance only does 550 km (NEDC).

Aside from its unique looks, the GWM Ora 07 also comes fairly well-equipped across the range, with highlights including LED headlights and daytime-running lights, a panoramic glass roof, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, and a retractable electric spoiler for the performance variant.

Inside, the Ora 07 also stands out with a unique ‘triple-gauge’ 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a supercar-inspired dashboard designcomplemented by tan leather upholstery and ambient lighting, as well as a full suite of advanced driver assistance features, including the marque’s curiously-named “wisdom dodge system”.
