Ora Good Cat now made in Thailand with locally-sourced battery, range dropped to 480km

The Thai CKD Ora Good Cat has been launched in the Land of Smiles with a starting price of THB799,000 (approx. RM106,304). Now essentially cheaper by nearly THB 30,000 (approx. RM3,991) compared to its fully imported (CBU) form, the CKD Ora Good Cat’s battery is also locally sourced in Thailand. This makes Thailand the first country in the ASEAN region to locally assemble GWM Models, and the Ora Good Cat the first CKD EV in Thailand.

Built at Great Wall Motor (GWM)’s plant in Rayong, the feline-like EV is available in three variants in Thailand. This includes the entry-level Pro variant, priced at THB799,000 (approx. RM106,304), the Ultra variant, priced at THB899,000 (approx. RM119,609), as well as the range-topping GT variant which carries a price tag of THB1,099,000 (approx. RM146,218).

The Thai CKD Ora Good Cat now sports a locally sourced 57.7 kWh battery pack across the range. This replaces the 47.8 kWh battery pack found in the fully imported Tech (since discontinued) and Pro variants, as well as the 63.1 kWh battery pack in the Ultra and GT variants. As a result, the all-electric ranges are rated at 480 km (NEDC) for the Pro and Ultra variants and 460 km (NEDC) for the GT variant.

Other equipment changes in the Thai CKD Ora Good Cat include a 50W wireless mobile phone charger, a 3,300 W vehicle-to-load (V2L) system, and a semi-bucket seat for the GT variant, among other things. The rotary-style gear selector that was present in the Thai CKD Ora Good Cat has been swapped out for a column-mounted gear selector.

The Ora Good Cat sold in Malaysia is currently fully imported from China. Offered in two variants, the 400 Pro and 500 Ultra, prices for the feline-like EV range from RM139,800 to RM169,800.

Powering both the Ora Good Cat 400 Pro and 500 Ultra in Malaysia is a single motor setup that makes 143 hp and 210 Nm. With a 47.8 kWh battery pack, the 400 Pro can travel as far as 400 km (NEDC) on a single charge, while the 500 Ultra can carry you further at 500 km (NEDC) thanks to its larger 63.1 kWh battery pack.

Just recently, GWM Malaysia appointed EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) as its contract vehicle assembler for eight years. According to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies, EPMB will be assembling the carmaker’s Haval H6 and Jolion at EPMB’s plant in Melaka. Whether a Malaysian CKD Ora Good Cat will be made a reality in the future is still unknown at this moment.
