First 66 units of the GWM Cannon Ultra pick-up truck now available in Malaysia, from RM128k

Great Wall Motors Malaysia (GWM Malaysia) has just announced the arrival of its GWM Cannon Ultra pickup truck in the Malaysian market via a post on its Instagram page. In conjunction with the celebration of the nation’s 66th year of independence, GWM Malaysia will also now be offering the first batch of 66 units of the Cannon Ultra, which are now available for viewing at the marque’s showrooms nationwide.

Based on a GWM dealer’s Facebook post, the GWM Cannon Ultra will be offered at a price tag of RM127,800, on-the-road, without insurance. However, it should be noted that there has not been any official pricing announcement from GWM Malaysia itself, nor any details on the variants to be offered in the future; the pick-up truck is currently available in the sole “Ultra” variant only.

That said, two variants of the GWM Cannon were previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 earlier this year, based on the P11 and P12 variants of the Cannon’s Chinese domestic model, Poer, and thus the GWM Cannon Ultra will most likely feature an equipment list similar to the P12.

Set to compete against the likes of the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton in Malaysia, the GWM Cannon Ultra sports a rather “grand” looking exterior. Up front, it features a grille with large portions of chrome and a huge emblem plastered in the centre, alongside automatic LED headlights with chrome inserts.

The aggressive front fascia is paired to the chrome-plated side view mirrors, door handles, and a minimalist sports bar above the truck bed. To complete the Cannon Ultra’s exterior, it is also fitted with a set of 18-inch dual-tone alloys.

Moving inside, you will find a rather premium-looking and feeling interior. For starters, there is the fully digital instrument display, touchscreen central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, leather-wrapped steering wheel with control buttons and paddle shifters, chunky shift-by-wire gear lever, and electronic parking brake (EPB), among other gadgets and features.

There is also a large amount of soft-touch materials being used throughout the interior. Together with the automatic air-conditioning, plus the quilted patterns on the leather seats and door panels, the interior can make you forget that you are in a pickup truck.

Powering the GWM Cannon is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that makes 161 hp and 400 Nm. Mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, power is sent to all four wheels via the pickup truck’s four-wheel drive system.

Safety-wise, the GWM Cannon is equipped with features such as six airbags and a 360-degree camera system. It also comes with a Level-2 autonomous driving system, which consists of features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning (LDW), and lane keep assist (LKA).

Again, note that none of these specifications have been officially confirmed by GWM Malaysia just yet, and they’re based just on the Chinese market Poer P12 that was previewed in Malaysia this year. That said, what do you think of the RM127,800 asking price? Will you choose the GWM Cannon over its Japanese rivals? Let us know in the comments below!
