We’ve recently returned from a trip to Penang in the new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid with some pictures and some rather interesting information to share about the crossover. It’s expected to be priced at an estimated RM137k and will be launched this Friday (14th of January) at 9 pm.

For the most part, the car looks nearly identical to the standard 1.8 model except for a few minor differences on the interior and exterior. On the outside, the Corolla Cross Hybrid variant comes with blue details by the front and rear badge and in the headlamps.
Standard exterior features include full LED lighting including the front and rear fog lamps, roof rails and hands-free powered tailgate with kick sensor. The wheels are 18-inch in size, just like the 1.8V variant.
Inside, features offered exclusive in the hybrid variant includes dual zone air conditioning, electrochromic mirrors, floor mats with blue details, and a larger 7-inch multi-information display. In the non-hybrid variant, you get a 4.2-inch display instead.
Also available exclusively in the hybrid variant is the drive mode selector; offering four different drive modes – Sport, Eco, Normal and EV. There are three USB ports – one at the infotainment system, and two USB-C ports at the rear.
As for the trip Penang, we flagged off from UMQ Toyota’s HQ in Shah Alam with a full tank of petrol, that offered around 600 km of range. Upon arrival in Teluk Bahang, Penang, we clocked 7.6L/100 km, with about a quarter tank of fuel and 90 km range left to go.
Quite impressive when you conside that the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with a tiny 36-litre fuel tank, to accomodate the hybrid system’s batteries. The standard 1.8 variants – the 1.8V and 1.8G – comes with a 47-litre tank. Boot space fortunately is unaffected at 440-litres, similar to the non-hybrid models.
Speaking of the batteries, it comes with an 8-year unlimited mileage warranty. The warranty also extends to the inverter unit and the power management control ECU.
As for the powertrain, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-litre engine with 98 hp and 142 Nm, paired to an electric motor with 72 hp and 163 Nm. The combo is paired to an e-CVT gearbox, with a combined output of 122 hp.
