GWM begins CKD assembly of Ora 03 EV in Indonesia with over 40% domestically sourced parts

The GWM Ora 03, known locally in Malaysia as the GWM Ora Good Cat, has begun local assembly at Inchcape GWM Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) production facility in Bogor. According to reports from Mashable Indonesia, the locally assembled compact EV hatchback has already achieved a Domestic Component Level of more than 40%, meaning that over 40% of its components are locally sourced.

The high level of local content reflects its commitment to supporting the government’s push to localise EV components, strengthening Indonesia’s supply chains, the company says, adding that its assembly facilities use manufacturing processes and quality testing that meet GWM’s global standards.

Highlighting the significance of the move, Inchcape Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Phil Jenkins, said, “The start of production of the ORA 03 electric vehicle in Indonesia underscores Inchcape’s belief that Indonesia is a key pillar of our Asia Pacific strategy. Indonesia offers exceptional scale, capability, and ambition, and we are committed to delivering world-class products to Indonesian consumers.”

Inchcape GWM Indonesia CEO, Bagus Susanto, added, “The first local production of the ORA 03 is a clear demonstration of our commitment to transforming the national automotive industry. Indonesia has tremendous potential as both a market and a manufacturing hub, and we are ready to ensure every customer receives the best products meeting global standards.”

The locally assembled GWM Ora 03 will only be delivered to customers starting next year. For now, the GWM Ora 03 is still offered in Indonesia in its pre-facelift version, in a single variant. It shares the same front electric motor as the Malaysian models, producing 143 hp and 210 Nm, but is fitted with a smaller 47.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, capable of a 400 km range under the NEDC testing cycle.

Although it has a smaller battery, it also allows faster charging. The Ora 03 in Indonesia can go from 30–80% in just 32 minutes via 60 kW DC fast charging, while a full charge using 6.6 kW AC power takes around eight hours. By comparison, recently updated Ora Good Cat in Malaysia, with a larger 57.7 kWh battery, requires nine hours for a full AC charge and 38 minutes for DC fast charging.

The Malaysian Ora Good Cat also features a newly redesigned centre console, which does away with the old rotary gear selector for a cleaner and more direct layout.

Closer to home, the Chinese carmaker’s local entity in Malaysia has also recently reiterated its commitment to local assembly here on our shores in a major step toward “building Malaysia as a key regional hub for GWM”.

No specific information were divulged on the CKD works, although the company says that it will be introducing more new energy vehicles (NEVs) as part of its “All Powertrains. All Scenarios. All Users.” philosophy, which aims to meet the diverse needs of Malaysian drivers
