When it comes to higher end vehicles, most people immediately think of German (or some Japanese ones) — often with price tags exceeding RM300k. Omoda Jaecoo wants to challenge that perception with the Jaecoo J8, delivering a comparable experience at a far more accessible price.
Priced from RM178,800 for the front-wheel-drive (FWD) variant and RM198,800 for the all-wheel-drive (AWD), both on-the-road without insurance, the Jaecoo J8 brings premium motoring within reach of more Malaysians.
The first step is, of course, looking the part. Among the others in this price range, the Jaecoo J8 certainly does, in our opinion at least. Unlike the boxier J7, the J8 features a curvier front end with a large, gaping grille flanked by sleek LED headlights, giving it an imposing yet sophisticated presence reminiscent of some of the larger Mercedes-AMG SUVs.
At the rear, the taillight assembly features intricate vertical slats connected by a full-width light bar — a look that’s all the rage at the moment. The J8 also rides on 20-inch wheels that complement its large stature and comes standard with a panoramic sunroof to enhance that “first-class” experience.

Moving inside, the company’s “first-class” theme continues with the black wood veneer lined with a brushed bronze trim. On the dashboard sits dual 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment display — the latter supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Standard features include a 12-speaker Sony sound system, a 50W ventilated wireless charging pad, and leather upholstery. The AWD variant takes things up a notch with a six-seater 2+2+2 layout featuring Nappa leather captain seats in the second row, 256-colour ambient lighting, and an upgraded 14-speaker Sony audio system — complete with two speakers integrated into the driver’s headrest.
Both variants of the Jaecoo J8 are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 249 hp and 385 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The FWD variant completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds, while the AWD version takes slightly longer at 9.0 seconds. Both share the same top speed of 200 km/h.

In terms of safety, the Jaecoo J8 comes standard with six airbags, while the AWD variant adds four more for a total of 10 airbags. Both variants are also equipped with a 540-degree surround-view camera and Level 2.5 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which include features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Change Assist (LCA).
Prices for the Jaecoo J8 start from RM178,800 for the FWD variant and RM198,800 for the AWD variant, both on the road without insurance. Each purchase includes a seven-year or 150,000 km warranty for added peace of mind.
