Proton ends Shah Alam operations after 40 years – now based in Tanjung Malim

Proton announced that it will be consolidating all of its manufacturing operations at its plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, which is located in the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV).

This marks the end of an era as the company will cease operations at its historic Shah Alam plant after 40 years. The plant’s final act was the rollout of the last current-generation Proton Saga on September 30, 2025. As part of the transition, 1,400 of the Shah Alam plant’s manufacturing staff will be relocated to Tanjung Malim.

The Shah Alam plant commenced operations in 1985, two years after Proton’s establishment in 1983. Spanning 83.48 hectares, the facility was built with an initial investment of RM370 million and housed the nation’s first automotive research and development (R&D) centre, complete with a high-speed test track.

Over 40 years, the plant assembled more than four million vehicles, including iconic models like the Proton Saga, Wira, Perdana, and Exora.

Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant is now the central hub for the company. With an annual production capacity of 250,000 units, the facility integrates five vital production sections—including engine and transmission machining, stamping, body assembly, paint, and final assembly—under one roof.

The plant features Malaysia’s largest mechanical press and is the first facility outside of China to produce the 1.5 TGDi engine. It also includes Malaysia’s first dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) factory.

Currently, the Tanjung Malim plant assembles the Proton Persona, the X-series SUVs, and the Proton S70. It will also be the production hub for the electric Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) and the upcoming eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5).

To officially welcome the 1,400 relocated employees, a ceremony was held and officiated by Proton’s Covering Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Ainol Azmil, alongside the top management team.

“Today marks a historic milestone for Proton as 1,400 colleagues from Shah Alam begin a new journey at Tanjong Malim. With their decades of dedication and experience, Proton is prepared for the journey ahead, positioning our plant as the primary hub for the next generation of Proton vehicles,” Azmil said.
