Video: Under RM300k, but more luxurious than an Alphard?! GWM Wey G9 FIRST LOOK!

Malaysia’s luxury MPV market has long been dominated by the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Like many Chinese carmakers recently, GWM is looking to challenge that dominance with the GWM Wey G9, formerly known as the Wey 80. Locally assembled, it will be the brand’s first CKD right-hand-drive model in the region, with prices expected to start below RM300,000 when it launches before the end of 2025.

The GWM Wey G9 boasts a strong, commanding presence with a large front grille with vertical slats (almost like a Rolls-Royce) flanked by LED headlights and full-width LED taillights at the rear. Sitting on 18-inch rims, the car comes in three colour options — White, Grey, and Black.

Stepping inside, the GWM Wey G9 is kitted with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and is paired with a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen. Luxurious touches include Nappa leather upholstery, wood veneer trims, ambient lighting, and a refrigerator with dual access via the front armrest and a rear drawer for backseat passengers.

Speaking of the backseats, the star of the cabin — like most MPVs in this class — is the middle-row captain’s seats. Offered with a 2-2-3 seating layout in the preview configuration, these seats come with ventilation and massage functions, can be adjusted electronically, and recline into “zero-gravity” mode at the touch of a button for ultimate relaxation. For passengers who prefer entertainment over a nap, a roof-mounted flip-out screen is also available.

Powering the luxury MPV is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a dual-motor hybrid system that produces a total of 442 hp and 642 Nm. Power from the engine travels through a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission and is also assisted by a rear e-axle. With all-wheel drive, it sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h.

GWM claims that the Wey G9 will be able to achieve over 1,000 km (NEDC) of range in just a single tank of fuel. Fitted with a 44.2 kWh battery, the car can also run on electric power only with a range of 170 km (NEDC). Both AC and DC charging are supported, with the latter allowing for a 30-80% charge in just 30 minutes

The GWM Wey G9 is now open for booking, with prices expected to start below RM300,000. GWM says the car will be launching very soon, so stay tuned for the latest updates ahead of its debut later this year.
