The XPeng X9 looks set to join the growing ranks of hybrid vehicles with over 1,000 km of range, as XPeng has announced via Weibo that a new range-extender hybrid (REEV) variant will be debuting in Q4 2025.
According to the company, the XPeng X9 REEV is already undergoing an exhaustive global testing programme ahead of its debut. This programme involves over 1,000 prototypes being tested in 20 countries worldwide, across 330 different cities, accumulating over 20 million km of mileage in over 800 days.
XPeng even threw in a teaser for its followers, asking them to guess what the names and numbers on the prototype’s decal mean. The decal prominently features the number “450” and the phrase “Power X 1,500”, which could be the pure electric range and the combined range of the REEV X9.
Based on a regulatory filing to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the REEV powertrain on the XPeng X9 is the company’s Kunpeng Super Range Extender, which is likely to have a pure EV range of 450 km, CarNewsChina reports.
The Kunpeng Super Range Extender features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 149 hp, paired to a lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, of which the exact capacity and details remain undisclosed at this time.

Based on the images provided by XPeng, the X9 REEV looks largely identical to its sibling except for the addition of an active front grille. XPeng also confirmed the REEV X9 will be a seven-seater, suggesting a similar interior layout to the updated X9 EV in China, which features second-row captain’s chairs and a fridge.
Other features on the updated XPeng X9 EV include rear-wheel steering, dual-chamber air suspension, and XPeng’s AI-based Turing ADAS system available as standard.

For context, the pure EV variant of the X9, which was updated for 2025, is available with two battery packs. The standard 94.8 kWh LFP battery offers 650 km of range (CLTC) as a front-wheel drive (FWD). The larger 105 kWh NMC battery offers different ranges depending on the drivetrain, providing up to 740 km (CLTC) for FWD variants and 702 km (CLTC) for all-wheel drive variants.
In Malaysia, the XPeng X9 is currently available in its pre-update guise, priced from RM270,708 with three FWD variants on offer. Powering the XPeng X9 in Malaysia is a single motor producing 320 hp and 450 Nm, paired with either an 84.5 kWh LFP battery pack, which is good for a range of 500 km (WLTP) or a 101.5 kWh NMC battery pack for up to 590 km (WLTP) of range.
