The 2025 Volvo EX30 Cross Country is an EV built to explore the wilderness

Volvo only just announced that it’ll be unveiling five new models in 2025, and the first one is already here. It’s called the Volvo EX30 Cross Country, and it’s the first fully electric (EV) model from Volvo to receive the “Cross Country” treatment, typically reserved for the company’s station wagons.

In keeping with the Cross Country nameplate’s ethos, the Volvo EX30 Cross Country gets a range of rugged upgrades. These include a 19 mm increase in ride height, front and rear skid plates, and wheel-arch extensions. Optional extras include a roof rack, mud flaps, and 18-inch all-terrain tyres, though they might slightly reduce the driving range.

Unique to the EX30 Cross Country are darker finishes for the front and rear bumpers. The front bumper even features a subtle design, showcasing the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden.

Inside, it’s business as usual. There’s the familiar 12.3-inch Google Built-in touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, a centre console with retractable cupholders, and the soundbar speaker setup located beneath the front windscreen.

Based on the dual-motor variant, the EX30 Cross Country boasts a total output of 428 hp and 543 Nm across all four wheels, translating to a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds. That’s 0.1 seconds slower than the regular dual-motor Volvo EX30, possibly due to the altered aerodynamics from the taller ride height of the Cross Country variant.

The same 69 kWh battery pack (64 kWh usable) found in the standard EX30 powers the motors, but the WLTP-rated range here is rated at 427 km, down from 450 km (WLTP) in the regular dual-motor variant. Charging from 10% to 80% takes 26 minutes, using the same 175 kW DC fast charging as the non-Cross Country variants.

Official pricing for the Volvo EX30 Cross Country has not been released yet, but rumours suggest it will start at around USD50,000 (approx. RM223k) in the US.

In Malaysia, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has opened the order books for the locally assembled (CKD) Volvo EX30. Two variants, Ultra and Ultra Twin Performance, will be available, with pricing starting at RM208,888. As for the EX30 Cross Country, it remains to be seen whether it will make its way to Malaysia, but we certainly hope it does!
