The Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) has made a strong start to the year, topping the Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) sales chart for January 2025, with 421 units registered, according to JPJ data.
This strong performance comes as the overall Malaysian car market saw 53,930 cars registered in January 2025, with EVs accounting for 1,691 units, or 3.14% of the total.
The BYD Sealion 7 secured second position with 151 registrations, while the affordable seven seater EV, the BYD M6, claimed third place with 136 units.
The BMW i5 in fifth place with 103 units registered was the final EV to exceed 100 registrations. Among the newer arrivals, the Zeekr X registered 21 units and the Zeekr 009 at 81 units registered.
Tesla’s registrations were notably lower in January, with only three units of the Model 3 and 10 units of the Model Y registered. This dip is likely attributable to the recently unveiled Model Y facelift, as customers appear to be holding out for the updated version. Deliveries for the updated Tesla Model Y is expected to start in April 2025.

- Xpeng G6 – 81 units
- Zeekr 009 – 81 units
- GWM Ora (includes Good Cat and Ora 07) – 43 units
- MG4 EV – 41 units
The number of EV registrations in Malaysia is expected to increase in the following months as brands ramp up deliveries of new models and fulfill back orders. For context, Proton received 3,000 bookings for the eMAS 7 in less than a month following its December 2024 launch.
This has prompted Proton to extend the eMAS 7’s RM4,000 rebate and special launch package from the initial 3,000 bookings to the first 6,000 customers.
