Volvo rolls out biggest OTA update in history, bringing big UI improvements to models dating back to 2020

Volvo Cars has announced its largest-ever over-the-air (OTA) software update, which will introduce a brand-new infotainment user interface (UI) to around 2.5 million vehicles worldwide equipped with Google built-in, free of charge. This means models dating back to 2020 will now receive the latest Volvo Car UX, previously reserved for 2026 model year cars.

Still based on the Android Automotive operating system (OS) with standard Google services, the updated Volvo Car UX focuses on making everyday interactions faster and more intuitive.

The most noticeable change is a more user-friendly and modern screen layout. The home screen has been redesigned so that commonly used functions such as navigation, media, and climate controls are more prominently displayed. This means drivers no longer need to exit apps like Google Maps just to adjust music or access other key features.

A new contextual bar has also been introduced. This dynamically changes depending on the driving situation, showing recently used apps or relevant functions. For example, at lower speeds, the system can display shortcuts to the exterior cameras to assist with manoeuvring in tight spaces.

Visually, the UI now carries a cleaner and more contemporary design, standardising the infotainment experience across the entire Volvo lineup. This means a three-year-old Volvo XC40 can now offer a similar UI experience to the flagship Volvo EX90.

In the previous UI, apps were arranged like items on a shelf, and opening one would occupy the entire screen. Returning to the home screen required tapping a small corner icon for an expanded view or pressing the dedicated home button — a few extra steps compared to the new, more streamlined layout.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivers stand to benefit as well. The updated UI introduces a simplified and more accessible drive mode selector directly from the home screen. Switching into ‘Pure’ mode for fully electric driving is now quicker, requiring just a single tap. This makes it easier for owners to optimise electric usage in daily driving.

Alongside the UI update, Volvo will also begin offering its Pilot Assist driver assistance feature as a downloadable purchase for vehicles equipped with Google built-in but not originally specified with the system. This allows eligible owners to unlock the semi-autonomous driving feature after purchase, though we are not entirely sure if it will be available for Malaysian models.

Volvo Cars Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Anders Bell, said, “This update is one of the largest over-the-air updates in automotive history, leveraging years of investment in Volvo Cars’ tech stack to improve life with their cars for millions of people.”

“Our new user experience delivers significant updates and improvements in areas most used by drivers, and directly addresses the needs and desires of our customers,” he added.
