Proton has sold 11,025 cars in both its domestic and export markets in April 2024. This is a growth of 17.1% over the same month in 2023. As for its year-to-date (YTD) sales, the national carmaker sold a total of 50,175 cars, 473 more cars than in the same period last year.

Proton says its export sales also played a key role in its 2024 YTD sales numbers. Its export sales have grown by 38.5% over the same period last year, from 603 to 835 units.

The company’s market share in April is currently estimated at 18.7%. Proton’s year-to-date (YTD) market share is forecasted to be at 19.2%, maintaining its second position in the overall national automotive sales ranking.

When it comes to the sales numbers of Proton’s individual models, the Saga maintains as the brand’s best-selling model with 23,278 units sold in 2024 thus far. The S70 comes second with 7,463 units leaving the showroom floor in the same period.

Following behind are the X50, Persona, and X70, which recorded 7,086, 6,799 units, and 1,972 units of sales respectively thus far in 2024. As for the Iriz and X90, Proton sold a total of 1,958 and 1,377 units of them respectively in the last four months.

The best-selling Proton model in the brand’s export market is the Saga which recorded 427 units of sales in 2024 thus far, a 16% increase from 368 units in the same period last year. The X50 came in second with 176 units sold, while the S70 recorded 89 units in its only export market, Brunei.

Proton Edar Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah said, “The slowdown in automotive sales in April, where TIV shrank by 16.8% compared to March 2024, can be attributed to the long holiday period as OEMs, dealerships and other members of the local automotive ecosystem took time off to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. However, the sustained demand for Proton models is further bolstered by ongoing efforts in quality improvement with better Global Customer Product Audit (GCPA) scores since 2019, instilling greater confidence among drivers.”

“Export sales remains a vital pillar to Proton’s long-term goals and with the Proton S70 ramping up its sales in the domestic as well as export market, we are confident of achieving sustainable exports sales growth this year and raise the contribution of export sales to our annual sales volume. This year, we have added Trinidad and Tobago to our export portfolio and reestablished our foothold in Bangladesh. Proton is confident of the market rebounding in the short to medium term as there is still a lot of demand from car buyers and therefore, it is crucial for us to continue to do our best, ensuring excellence in every endeavour undertaken,” added Roslan Abdullah.
