MG Cyberster to launch by Q3 2024 – Malaysia’s first topless EV

MG’s all-electric roadster, the MG Cyberster is confirmed to be coming to Malaysia by Q3 this year (2024). SAIC Motor Malaysia confirmed this during a press conference held after the launch of the brand’s MG4 EV and ZS EV today.

SAIC Motor Malaysia has been teasing the MG Cyberster on its website since February this year, signalling its market launch that will be happening soon. When launched in Malaysia, the Cyberster will be the brand’s third model to be introduced here since its return to the country. It will also be the first EV roadster to be launched in Malaysia.

Sporting unique design elements such as scissor doors and interestingly styled arrow-shaped taillights, the MG Cyberster is probably the MG model most anticipated by Malaysians. Having launched in markets such as China and Thailand, it looks like we don’t have to wait too much longer to get our hands on the EV roadster.

In China, the MG Cyberster is offered in three variants and is available with dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) and single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) powertrains. The Chinese-market entry-level Glamour Edition sports a rear-mounted single motor setup that pushes out 314 hp (metric) and 475 Nm. Thanks to a 64 kWh battery, it has a CLTC-rate range of 501 km.

The mid-spec Style Edition on the other hand also sports a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup but produces slightly more horsepower at 340 hp (metric). A larger 77 kWh battery pack also allows you to drive it longer at 580 km (CLTC) on a single charge.

Having made its launch in Thailand recently, the EV roadster offered there comes with a sole dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain option that features similar performance figures to the top-spec Pioneer Edition offered in China. This powertrain pushes out 544 hp (metric) and 725 Nm, enabling the car to perform the century sprint in just 3.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 200 km/h.

Supplying power to the Thai-spec MG Cyberster is a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which allows the roadster to travel up to 503 km (NEDC) on a single charge. When the battery runs out of juice, it can be charged via DC charging at a maximum rate of 140 kW, which can juice it up from 10 to 80% in approximately 26 minutes.
