Toyota Alphard HEV debuts in Malaysia, 2.5L hybrid launching soon?

Aside from the Prius 24h Lemans Centennial GR Edition, UMW Toyota Motor has also debuted its other hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the Toyota Alphard HEV, at the Toyota Beyond Zero event. The Alphard HEV isn’t offered in the Malaysian market but is available in markets such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Taiwan.

Powering the Toyota Alphard HEV is a 2.5-litre hybrid system. The setup consists of a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that makes 190 hp (metric) and 233 Nm by itself, and an electric motor that pushes out 182 hp (metric) and 270 Nm on its own.

Mated to an E-CVT gearbox, the luxury hybrid MPV’s combined output is rated at 250 hp (metric). Power can be sent to either the front wheels only or all four wheels via Toyota’s hybrid E-Four AWD System.

Toyota mentioned the Toyota Alphard HEV has a fuel consumption rating of 5.5L/100km. This is 38.8% lower compared to the regular internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered Alphard, even though no specific variant is mentioned.

By opting for the Alphard HEV, the Japanese carmaker claims that you can save up to RM11,400 in fuel after eight years of usage with 20,000 km of mileage per year. The electrified MPV’s CO2 emission is rated at 124 g/km, which is 39% lower compared to a non-electrified Alphard.

In Malaysia, the fourth-generation Toyota Alphard is offered in the form of the 2.4T Executive Lounge variant, carrying a RM538,000 price tag. As its name suggests, the luxury MPV sports a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged Dual VVT-i engine under its hood, producing 278 hp (metric) and 430 Nm. The mill is mated to a Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission and sends power to the front wheels.

As of now, UMW Toyota Motor has yet to mention if the Alphard HEV will be brought into the Malaysian market. What are your thoughts on the electrified luxury MPV? Would you pay more for better fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions?
