BMW Malaysia and its PHEV customers plant over 700 trees in Borneo

Plug-in hybrids when sufficiently charged run on zero local emissions thanks to the large battery pack and powerful electric motor, making the surrounding air a little cleaner and the environment a little quieter. BMW Malaysia together with their PHEV customers went a step further for the environment by planting more trees!

BMW Malaysia, via the company’s financial services arm, today announced the completion of their reforestation commitment in Borneo with the Animal Projects and Environmental Education (APE Malaysia). Under the Restore Our Amazing Rainforest (ROAR) programme, both BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia and the generosity of new PHEV customers helped to plant 735 new trees.

BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia, CEO, Matthias Schlesiger said, “In the last year, we have made several commitments to give back to local communities in any way we can. We started with the BMW Safety 360° campaign where we were able to raise donations to fund complimentary child car seats for families in need. We extended the same effort to biodiversity conservation as well and partnered with APE Malaysia to support their reforestation efforts in the forests of Borneo. The protection of natural resources ultimately falls onto the very people that benefit from it, and we are grateful that our customers share this conviction with us.”

For every RM100 raised, five new trees were successfully planted at the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary under the ROAR programme. The programme serves to restore habitat for endangered animals which includes the Orangutan and Borneo pygmy elephant, as well as to counteract carbon footprint.

The initiative, which took place on the 1st of May to the 31st of July this year, saw contributions made on behalf of BMW and MINI with the sale of the BMW 330e, BMW 530e M Sport, BMW 740Le xDrive, BMW X5 xDrive45e, as well as the MINI Cooper SE Countryman PHEV plus the fully electric MINI Cooper SE.

The fundraising efforts by BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia will continue under the BMW Engage platform, as customers can still own their dream PHEVs while contributing to another good cause. From now until the 31st of December, RM100 from every funded contract of the same list of BMW and MINI PHEV models will be channelled to two local non-governmental organisations: Refuge for the Refugees and Empire Project – both of which are actively providing essential aid to vulnerable communities in Malaysia.
