Geely Xingyuan to get more range in China, eMAS 5 to follow?

The Geely Xingyuan (known as the Proton e.MAS 5 in Malaysia) is set to receive a minor update, according to a report by Sina citing a new filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The update brings slight exterior revisions along with increased range thanks to larger battery options.

The filings also reveal a new selection of wheel hubcap designs, which will be offered alongside the familiar four-spoke look currently seen in Malaysia. This is also visible in one of Autohome’s spy shots, which shows the car fitted with a new six-spoke design. The updated model is also 105 mm longer at 4,240 mm overall, likely due to redesigned bumpers that give it a sleeker look.

The same set of spyshots also revealed parts of the interior, which show a new set of multi-function buttons added to both sides of the steering wheel. This brings it closer in line with some of the carmaker’s higher-end models, such as the Geely Galaxy E5 (better known as Proton e.MAS 7 in Malaysia).

Looking closely at the centre console, the button layout appears to have been revised, with the area previously housing the gear selector now partially redesigned. The report also claims that the gear selector has been relocated behind the steering wheel, adopting a column-mounted setup.

Going back to the MIIT filing, it details that the Geely Xingyuan will receive a new larger battery pack. The entry-level variant will see its battery increased from 30.12 kWh to a 35 kWh capacity, while the long range variant will be upgraded from 40.16 kWh to 47 kWh — all of which still constructed via the same lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

The larger battery capacities also increase the claimed driving range, from 310 km and 410 km previously to 360 km and 460 km respectively, based on China’s more lenient CLTC testing standard.

For context, the Proton eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5) is rated at up to 225 km in Prime guise and 325 km for the longer-range Premium variant, with both figures measured using the more realistic WLTP test cycle.

And that is where changes end. The MIIT filings did not mention if the car will receive faster charging capacities, but has confirmed that it will feature the same rear-mounted electric motor (RWD) setup featuring up to 116 hp and 150 Nm.

As one of China’s best-selling EVs, the Geely Xingyuan has also found strong success in Malaysia as the Proton eMAS 5, with the national carmaker recording over 8,000 eMAS 5 deliveries year-to-date in 2026. More importantly, this latest update appears to address one of the biggest criticisms of the model, which could further boost the appeal of the eMAS 5 in our market.
