We could soon see a new BYD on Malaysian roads. BYD Sime Motors has posted a cryptic teaser on its social media with the caption “Faster, Further, Smarter”, hinting that a new model is coming soon, which raises the question: what exactly do they have bound for local shores?

Looking at BYD’s lineup in Malaysia and current developments in China, our money is on the new facelifted Atto 3, which made its debut at Auto China 2026. Considering that the current Atto 3 made its local debut back in late 2022 as BYD’s maiden model in Malaysia, the time is certainly ripe for the introduction of the updated crossover.

Of course, this remains pure speculation until BYD officially pulls back the veil. If it really is the updated Atto 3, Malaysian buyers can look forward to a completely fresh aesthetic. The front fascia sheds the heavy plastic trimmings of the outgoing model, sporting a redesigned full-width taillight setup and a sharper rear bumper.

Interestingly, the updated model presents a bit of a physical paradox. While it has grown larger in most dimensions, the new car is significantly narrower, measuring 155mm less in width.

Inside, the funky, divisive gym-themed interior has been replaced with a much more conventional setup, now consisting of an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel and a 15.6-inch centre infotainment display. The base variant swaps this out for a smaller 12.8-inch screen. Other interior updates include a new two-spoke steering wheel with a column-mounted gear shift lever, a front passenger seat complete with a leg-rest, and even an in-car refrigerator.

Under the skin, the new BYD Atto 3 is available in two outputs, both featuring a rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout. The first option is a 272 hp (200 kW) powertrain, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds. Range is rated at 540 km (CLTC) from a 57 kWh battery pack, which takes nine-minutes to charge from 10-97%.

The second option is a more powerful RWD setup making 326 hp (240 kW), which shortens the century sprint to 5.9 seconds. Equipped with a larger 68 kWh battery, its range is extended to 630 km (CLTC), mirroring the same nine-minute charge time from 10-97%.

Safety systems on the new BYD Atto 3 also receive a major overhaul. The on-board ADAS suite is now advanced enough to support Navigate on Autopilot across both city streets and highways, a feature driven directly by the marque’s new camera-and-radar-based God’s Eye C architecture.

For now, we will have to wait for announcements from BYD Sime Motors, the distributor of BYD cars in Malaysia, for concrete details about this mysterious model. Hopefully, it won’t be too long until its true identity is finally revealed.
