BYD builds 16-millionth NEV, just four months after reaching 15 million

Four months after BYD announced the production of its 15-millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), the Chinese carmaker has reached its 16-millionth unit. As reported by CarNewsChina, the milestone vehicle was a Denza D9.

The latest milestone reflects BYD’s continued scale expansion, with the company adding six million vehicles in under two years. To put this into perspective, BYD reached its 10-millionth milestone in November 2024 and has already surpassed the 16-millionth mark by April 2026.

The 2026 Denza D9 features significant mechanical upgrades, most notably the introduction of the Short Blade 2.0 battery. This new hardware supports “Flash-Charging”, which is capable of a 10-70% recharge in just five minutes. Even in extreme conditions as low as -30 degrees Celsius, the battery can reportedly manage a 20-97% charge in 12 minutes.

On the performance front, the battery-electric (BEV) variant now produces a combined 557 hp in its all-wheel-drive configuration. This is achieved by pairing a 462 hp front traction motor with a 95 hp rear traction motor, providing a range of up to 800 km on the CLTC cycle.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version is no slouch either, featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and dual electric motors that offer an electric-only range of over 400 km.

Visually, the updated Denza D9 sports a revised front fascia with a three-dimensional pattern. The technology suite has also been upgraded to include the “God’s Eye” 5.0 ADAS system, which utilises a roof-mounted LiDAR and various sensors for advanced autonomous driving. Inside, the cabin remains a luxury seven-seater affair, now featuring rear entertainment screens for the second row and a 6.8-litre fridge that operates between -6 and 50 degrees Celsius.
