BYD has officially produced its 15 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), a landmark feat achieved on 18th December 2025. This latest milestone comes after the carmaker hit the 13 million mark in mid-2025, which was achieved just eight months after reaching its 10 millionth unit.
The 15 millionth vehicle to roll off the line is a Denza N8L, a luxury six-seater plug-in hybrid SUV. With this achievement, BYD’s cumulative production numbers now exceeds Tesla’s total EV production of approximately 8.1 million vehicles, and the Volkswagen Group’s cumulative production of three million pure electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, combined.
It is important to note, however, that BYD’s NEV number includes both BEV and PHEV models, whereas Tesla’s output remains exclusively BEVs.
The brand’s momentum is led by the high-volume Ocean series models like the BYD Dolphin and BYD Seagull, both of which have surpassed one million units sold. These are further supported by the Song Plus and the recently launched Sealion 06.
Beyond the Ocean series, the established Dynasty series, featuring the Qin, Song, and Tang, continues to account for a significant portion of both domestic sales and rapidly expanding export markets.
Closer to home, BYD Malaysia has confirmed it will establish a new locally assembled (CKD) production facility in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The plant will span 600,000 square metres and is slated to commence operations by 2026. The announcement of the facility comes at a time when current tax exemptions for fully imported (CBU) EVs are set to expire at the end of 2025.
