Is the all-new Mazda CX-5 launching in July for under RM170k or are we just getting one last facelift?

The all-new third-generation Mazda CX-5 looks to be on track for a Malaysian debut this July, according to a results preview published by RHB Investment Bank. Curiously, the financial institution describes this upcoming arrival as a ‘facelifted CBU’ model, which is expected to be priced below RM170,000.

The bank’s use of a ‘facelift’ label is puzzling, as the current CX-5 sold in Malaysia is already locally-assembled (CKD) by Bermaz Auto, and the 2.0G High variant was recently updated for 2026 with a new 12.3-inch infotainment screen and body-coloured cladding.

It would be a peculiar move for Bermaz to purposely introduce an imported CBU model for what is presumed to be a final update of the ageing outgoing generation. However, there is a possibility that the “facelift” mentioned in the document is actually the third-generation CX-5 arriving early as a CBU unit for its Malaysian debut, before CKD operations commence in 2027.

Furthermore, joining the new Mazda CX-5 will be a new, yet-to-be-announced model. Previous reports suggested that Bermaz is planning to introduce a new, unnamed Mazda B-segment SUV as a CKD model, with a timeline of fiscal year 2028. Whether this is the mystery car mentioned by the bank remains unconfirmed, but the timing certainly fits the bill.

Unveiled globally in October 2025, the third-generation Mazda CX-5 features a more aggressive exterior sporting Mazda’s “evolved Soul of Motion” design language. The SUV has grown significantly in all dimensions, measuring 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,695 mm tall, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase.

The next-generation Mazda CX-5 is currently available globally with a single powertrain, which is the e-Skyactiv G 2.5-litre straight-four engine. This unit integrates a 24V mild-hybrid system, producing 141 hp and 238 Nm. According to Mazda, the CX-5 is also slated to receive the anticipated Skyactiv-Z engine, featuring the company’s proprietary hybrid powertrain in 2027.

Inside, the third-generation model features a significantly revamped cabin dominated by a new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display running Mazda’s all-new operating system. The larger touchscreen has led to the removal of physical climate control buttons. The company states this decision was based on internal customer feedback, which showed a preference for a larger infotainment display.

Whether it’s the all-new third-generation Mazda CX-5 or a facelift of the current model, we’ll have to wait until July to find out what B Auto has truly planned for Mazda’s lineup in Malaysia.
