All-new 3rd-gen Mazda CX-5 debuts in Europe with bolder design and mild-hybrid powertrain

Mazda has unveiled the all-new third-generation Mazda CX-5 in Europe, featuring a design that is perhaps more aggressive than its predecessor, thanks to the brand’s evolved “Soul of Motion” design language.

Defining features of this evolved design language include daytime running lights arranged in a staggered design and a front grille that receives a new black trim for a bolder look.

While the side profile is reminiscent of the outgoing model, the new SUV retains its sporty exposed twin exhaust tailpipes. The new taillights, however, do bear some resemblance to those on the current Honda CR-V.

Compared to the previous generation, the new Mazda CX-5 has had a growth spurt. It now measures 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,695 mm tall, making it noticeably larger than the outgoing model.

While Mazda did not reveal the official wheelbase measurement, based on its increased proportions, we reckon the wheelbase is also longer than before, which should translate to a more spacious interior.

The interior has been thoroughly modernised, starting with a new three-spoke steering wheel that now features the “Mazda” typeface in the centre instead of the traditional emblem. The dashboard prominently features a new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display. This system runs the company’s all-new operating system, which enhances connectivity with newly added apps.

However, based on official photos, it appears the introduction of this new large display has led to the removal of the physical climate control buttons that were present on the outgoing model. Likewise, for the driver, the old semi-analogue gauge cluster has now been replaced with a fully digital setup, bringing the CX-5’s cabin in line with its modern rivals.

Powering the all-new Mazda CX-5 at launch is the e-Skyactiv G 2.5 powertrain, featuring the Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid system. Mazda has not yet revealed the power and torque outputs but confirms this engine will be available for the SUV in Europe, Japan, and other key markets.

Furthermore, Mazda has announced that the all-new CX-5 is also slated to receive the anticipated Skyactiv-Z engine, featuring Mazda’s unique hybrid powertrain, in 2027.

In terms of safety, Mazda has stated that the all-new CX-5 will be equipped with an evolved suite of ADAS features, but did not reveal further details on what these features are.

The all-new third-generation Mazda CX-5 will arrive in European showrooms by the end of 2025, with other markets scheduled to follow in 2026. The company did not reveal any pricing information for the new SUV, but, as an all-new model with new features, it’s reasonable to expect a price increase over the outgoing generation.
