Low demand sees BYD pull the plug on the BYD Shark 6 in Thailand

The BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pickup truck has been cancelled for the Thai market due to low demand. The announcement was made by BYD Auto (Thailand) General Manager, Mr. Yu Bin Ke, at a recent media event, as reported by Autolifethailand.tv.

Making its debut in Thailand during the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show, the hybrid pickup truck opened for bookings with prices starting from approximately THB1.699 million (approx. RM221k), with plans for local assembly to start in 2026. The initial batch was limited to 500 units, but only 153 orders were placed – enough for BYD to pull the plug on introducing the truck in the Kingdom.

This is a stark contrast to the demand seen in Australia, where the BYD Shark 6 received such a welcome reception that its order-taking website crashed almost immediately after launch. There, the Shark 6 is priced from AUD57,900 (approx. RM159k) – a rather competitive price against its rivals while offering more equipment and power.

The difference is even more jarring, considering that pickup trucks are typically very popular in Thailand.

With the cancellation of the BYD Shark 6 in Thailand, it is unclear if plans to introduce the Shark 6 in Malaysia – which the company has previously hinted at – remain on track. If the BYD Shark 6 is introduced, it could become the first PHEV pickup truck to officially go on sale in Malaysia, but its reception in Thailand certainly casts a shadow on its potential debut here.

The PHEV powertrain on the BYD Shark 6 features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors, producing a combined output of 436 hp. This allows the BYD Shark 6 to go from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

Equipped with an onboard 29.58 kWh LFP battery pack, the Shark 6 has a pure EV range of 100 km (NEDC) and supports 40 kW DC charging, which allows a 30-80% recharge in 20 minutes.

BYD claims the Shark 6 delivers diesel-like fuel economy and twin-turbo V6 performance, the latter likely a reference to the Ford Ranger Raptor. It has a claimed fuel consumption of 7.5 L/100 km in hybrid mode, which allows for a combined range of 840 km (NEDC).
