BYD Shark coming to Malaysia? EV brand to explore new market segments as it records 10,000 cars sold

BYD is on track to exceed its 10,000th car delivered here in Malaysia sometime this month, and there are no signs of slowing down. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, as the company is currently exploring opportunities in other segments of vehicles to continue its upward momentum here in Malaysia.

This was revealed in a recent media roundtable session with BYD Malaysia Managing Director, Eagle Zhao. According to Zhao, the company – together with its distributor partner Sime Darby Motors – has already begun investigating the viability of introducing the BYD Shark pickup truck in Malaysia.

First unveiled globally in Mexico earlier this year, the BYD Shark (or Shark 6 in certain markets) has now been confirmed for launch in Australia, likely as the first right-hand-drive market for the pickup truck.

The BYD Shark is powered by the marque’s Dual Mode Offroad (DMO) hybrid technology, first seen on the Bao 5 that was previewed earlier in Malaysia. The powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine alongside two electric motors – including one e-Axle at the rear – for a total system output of over 436 hp.

In terms of performance figures, BYD says the Shark is capable of 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. A 29.58 kWh LFP battery pack provides up to 100 km (NEDC) of pure electric driving range, and can be charged from 30-80% in just 20 minutes at a maximum rate of 40 kW via DC charging.

Claimed to deliver diesel-like fuel economy and twin-turbo petrol V6 performance, the BYD Shark is said to deliver a fuel consumption figure 7.5L/100km of in hybrid mode, resulting in a combined range of 840 km (NEDC).

If introduced, the BYD Shark will likely be the marque’s first hybrid model here in Malaysia. When asked about the possibility of introducing more hybrid models here in Malaysia, Zhao said the company will try to provide whatever the market needs.

The company has already begun selling its hybrid products here in Southeast Asia, with Thailand being the first market to do so with the launch of the Sealion 6 DM-i earlier this month.
