Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series returns to Japan with new facelift – New 2.8-litre turbodiesel, Toyota Safety Sense

Unveiled to the world back in August, Toyota has reintroduced the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series back to the Japanese market. Originally launched in 1984, the Land Cruiser 70 Series was a heavy-duty model primarily meant for commercial use, but was discontinued in the country in 2004. Now, it’s back again in its home market.

On the outside, the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series retains its classic boxy exterior design but has been slightly modernised with a new grille and round LED headlamps up front. There is even a retro fender-mounted mirror located on the left-hand side to help with blind spots.

Like in the past, the Land Cruiser 70 Series continues to be underpinned by a ladder frame chassis, which has been tuned to provide better comfort. The electronic differential locks are here as well to aid with off-road activities.

Powering the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine also found under the hood of the brand’s own Hilux. The mill is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, pushing out 204 hp (metric) and 500 Nm to all four wheels via a part-time four-wheel drive system.

In the UAE, the heavy-duty off-roader is fitted with a 4.0-litre NA V6 petrol engine, while the Australian market will continue to receive the V8 turbodiesel engine alongside a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Since the original Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series from 40 years ago, the heavy-duty off-roader has gained a number of features, especially in the safety department. This includes vehicle stability control (VSC), active traction control (A-TRC), hill start assist control (HAC), and downhill assist control (DAC).

The Japanese carmaker has also equipped the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series with the Toyota Safety Sense suite. This features pre-crash safety, auto-control lighting, and drive-start control functions.

Toyota is offering its new Land Cruiser 70 Series at a price of 4,800,000 yen (approx. RM151,950) and is expecting to sell around 400 units of them in its home market.

The Land Cruiser 70 Series is also available with a Kinto subscription service, with a starting monthly price of 45,760 yen. If you are to go for the 7-year subscription plan, you will end up paying 6,153,840 yen (approx. RM194,856) before returning the car keys.
