2026 Honda Prelude launched in Malaysia – 2.0L eHEV coupe with Type R suspension from RM278k

Few cars unveiled in recent years have generated as much anticipation as the Honda Prelude. After first captivating crowds with its Asian premiere at KLIMS 2024, the revived coupe has now come full circle, returning to the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show in 2026 as a production model ready for Malaysian roads. Officially launched today, the 2026 Honda Prelude is priced from RM278,000 on-the-road without insurance.

The biggest talking point of the 2026 Honda Prelude since its unveiling has undoubtedly been its relationship with the Civic e:HEV. Yet despite the shared foundations, Honda insists this isn’t simply a two-door Civic, with clever features that simply give it a unique experience.

Under the bonnet sits an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine producing 141 hp and 182 Nm, similar to the Civic e:HEV. As with Honda’s series-parallel hybrid system, the engine primarily acts as a generator, supplying electricity to a 1.05 kWh battery that powers a front-mounted traction motor producing 184 hp and 315 Nm of torque.

At higher speeds, however, the engine can be clutched in to directly drive the front wheels for improved efficiency or performance. Combined, the system delivers a total output of 203 hp — allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h

The headline feature in the 2026 Honda Prelude is the marque’s new S+ Shift system, which is designed to replicate the sound, response, and feel of a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission despite the car utilising an e-CVT. Through a combination of software and hardware controls, the system simulates gear changes to deliver a more engaging driving experience.

While similar concepts have already appeared in performance EVs such as Hyundai’s N-badged Ioniq models, Honda’s approach differs in one key area. Instead of relying solely on artificial sounds and shifting, the Prelude revs its combustion engine to generate sound and physically adjusts engine rpm to create the sensation of real gear changes. The effect is then reinforced by the Active Sound Control system, which enhances the engine note via pumped-in audio.

To further enhance the illusion, S+ Shift also recreates the subtle surge and jolt associated with upshifts and downshifts in a conventional automatic. The system can even perform simulated downshifts under heavy braking when left in automatic mode.

Backing up the powertrain is the use of dual-axis MacPherson strut front suspension and adaptive dampers from the Honda Civic Type R. Don’t expect it to be as aggressive as the hot hatch, however, as the Prelude has been positioned as a more comfort-oriented grand tourer while still retaining a degree of driver engagement on winding roads. Braking performance is handled by the same four-pot Brembo front brake setup found on the Type R.

Drivers can further tailor the experience through four selectable drive modes: Sport, GT, Comfort, and Individual. The latter allows customisation of up to six vehicle parameters, including powertrain response, steering weight, suspension settings, meter display, engine sound, and adaptive cruise control behaviour — great for dialling the driver’s desired balance of performance and comfort.

While its underpinnings are shared with the Civic, what’s certainly unique and true to the Prelude name is its two-door coupe body style. Inspired by the sleek form of a glider, the coupe adopts a low-slung stance with a sharp nose, flowing roofline, and muscular rear haunches that emphasise its sporting intentions and stay true to the Prelude’s grand touring character.

Further complementing its presence are slim LED headlights with a distinctive daytime running light signature, while a full-width rear light bar spans the tailgate. Completing the look are 19-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels paired with blue brake callipers, providing a subtle visual hint at the hybrid coupe’s performance credentials. At launch, the Honda Prelude is available in a choice of three exterior colours: Winter Frost Pearl, Rallye Red, and Crystal Black Pearl.

Inside, it’s a familiar sight if you’re well-versed with the Honda Civic. Ahead of the driver sits a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Much of the switchgear will also be familiar to Civic owners, with the multifunction steering wheel and climate control panel largely carried over from the sedan.

Honda has, however, made quite an effort to give the Prelude a more premium feel too. Exclusive touches include an eight-speaker Bose sound system, an Alcantara steering wheel centre marker, dual-tone leather upholstery, and a pair of semi-bucket front seats embroidered with the ‘Prelude’ wordmark on the headrests. Together, these additions help distinguish the coupe from its sedan sibling while reinforcing its grand touring character.

Once again, the 2026 Honda Prelude is priced from RM278,000 on the road and without insurance. Included in the price is a five-year unlimited mileage warranty and five times free labour services applicable within five years or 100,000 km. As for its hybrid battery and components, that’s given an additional 10-year unlimited mileage warranty.
