After a long preview period that began at KLIMS 2024, GWM Malaysia has finally officially launched the GWM Wey G9. Locally assembled (CKD) here in Malaysia, the new luxury MPV is offered in a single Hi4 PHEV variant, and is priced at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance.
The GWM Wey G9 measures 5,050 mm in length, 1,985 mm in width, 1,900 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,085 mm. While its wheelbase is larger than the Toyota Alphard, overall size wise, it is still slightly smaller to the other Chinese alternatives such as the Denza D9, XPeng X9, and Zeekr 009, as it is based on the short-wheelbase version of the Wey Gaoshan in China.
Nevertheless, the GWM Wey G9 boasts a commanding road presence, with its front fascia dominated by a large vertical-slat grille flanked by sleek LED headlights. At the rear, it features a full-width light bar that almost resembles a secondary spoiler, complemented by vertical light strips for the taillights. Riding on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, it certainly won’t be easy to miss on Malaysian highways. As standard, the car comes equipped with:
- Intelligent LED headlights with auto high beam and follow me home
- LED daytime running lights
- LED taillights
- Full-width LED rear light bar
- LED front and rear fog lamps
- Power folding side mirrors
- Power-operated sliding doors
- Powered tailgate
- Power sliding rear doors
- Automatic wipers
- Hidden rear wiper
- 18-inch alloy wheels

The app also allows for remote monitoring, allowing drivers to observe information such as hybrid power status, total mileage and fuel levels, and even tyre pressure.

Under the bonnet, the Wey G9 is powered by GWM’s Hi4 all-wheel drive hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine (150 hp, 240 Nm) with two electric traction motors — one integrated into the four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and another mounted on the rear e-axle — contributing an additional 80 hp and 170 hp from the front and 135 hp and 170 Nm at the rear axle.
Altogether, the GWM Wey G9 delivers a combined system output of 442 hp and 642 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h.
Fitted with a 44.2 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, GWM claims a total driving range of over 1,000 km (NEDC) from a single tank, with an all-electric range of up to 170 km (NEDC). The hybrid system supports 6.6 kW AC charging and up to 70 kW DC fast charging. AC charging goes from 15-100% in 6.5 hours, while DC fast charging allows for a 30–80% top-up in just 26 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function with up to 3.3 kW is also supported, allowing passengers to power home appliances on the go.

During its preview last year, GWM said the Wey G9 had achieved a five-star NCAP safety rating. It features high-strength steel reinforcement in the A- and B-pillars, additional chassis beams and structural adhesive in key areas to improve crash protection, while a tube-frame structure at the rear helps protect third-row passengers.
All seating rows are covered by large curtain airbags measuring 3,107 mm long and 700 mm wide, while the battery pack is protected by four side layers and six underbody layers, along with a reinforced sealing structure. GWM says the battery system has passed performance, stress and reliability testing to ensure durability and safety in various conditions.
