Three months after its regional debut in Thailand, Volvo Cars Malaysia (VCM) has now launched the all-new Volvo ES90 in Malaysia. It is available as a locally-assembled (CKD) model, with a single variant on offer: the Volvo ES90 Ultra Single Motor Extended Range. The Volvo ES90 is priced in Malaysia from RM339,800 on-the-road, excluding insurance.
The pricing is a significant RM52,500 cheaper than the recently launched BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro, which is also now locally assembled in Malaysia, at RM392,300. On the Stuttgart side, Mercedes-Benz’s electric executive sedan range also starts at RM379,888 for the EQE350+ Electric Art Line, making the Scandinavian option a much more attractive option for those hunting value.

The Volvo ES90 is built on the same SPA2 architecture as the Volvo EX90. Looks wise, it carries a unique high-riding sedan silhouette, incorporating a three-box-shaped exterior from a sedan, plus a sloping fastback rear, and the ride height of an SUV at 203 mm (178 mm ground clearance), making it in a “class of its own”, Volvo says.
Despite its tall ground clearance, the Volvo ES90 still boasts a drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd, making it the most aerodynamic Volvo to date, which should help extend its range. Borrowing design cues from the Volvo EX90, the ES90 features the iconic Thor’s Hammer headlights and C-shaped tail lights at the back, with separate LED elements book-ending the rear windscreen, similar to the Volvo EX30.
Other exterior equipment on the Volvo ES90 in Malaysia includes:
- LED High Definition Pixel matrix headlights with Thor’s Hammer light signature
- C-shaped LED taillights
- Powered tailgate
- Soft-closing doors
- Rain sensing automatic windshield wipers
- 22-inch five-spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels, available in Glossy Black or Matt Graphite
The interior of the Volvo ES90 mirrors that of the EX90, but with some key differences. The most notable is the switch from a round knob on the centre console of the SUV, to a physical rotary dial beneath the 14.5-inch central portrait infotainment display here, used to control the multimedia system.
The ES90’s infotainment system runs on the next-generation Volvo Car UX with Google Built-in. Bootspace on the Volvo ES90 is rated at 424 litres, expandable to 904 litres with the rear seats folded. For added practicality, it also includes a 27-litre frunk.
Other interior equipment of the Volvo ES90 in Malaysia includes:
- Four-zone automatic climate control with PM2.5 air purifier
- Nordico upholstery in Charcoal colour
- Six interior ambient lighting themes
- 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system
- Nine-inch driver’s digital gauge cluster with heads-up display
- 14.5-inch centre infotainment touchscreen display
- Heated and ventilated front and rear seats with a massage function for the front seats
- Power-reclinable rear seats with lounge armrest
Powering the Volvo ES90 in Malaysia is a rear-mounted electric motor producing 333 hp (245 kW) and 480 Nm, enabling 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, and a top speed of 180 km/h. This is juiced by a 92 kWh NMC battery pack, enabling a range of 651 km (WLTP).
Marking the first Volvo to feature an 800V architecture, the ES90 supports DC charging of up to 350 kW. This enables a 10-80% recharge in 22 minutes and allows the ES90 to regain 300 km of range in 10 minutes. With AC charging supported at 11 kW, it takes approximately 10 hours for a full charge.
For safety, the Volvo ES90 features an array of hardware, including five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors for its ADAS systems. This hardware suite is powered by the Nvidia Drive AGX Orin core computer, capable of processing over 500 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
It’s worth noting that the Malaysian-spec ES90 does not have a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, following the contract termination between Volvo and its US-based supplier, Luminar. Nevertheless, the ADAS features on the Volvo ES90 include:
- 360-degree surround view camera
- Pilot Assist with Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
- Blind spot monitors (BSM)
- Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) with low-speed auto brake
- Lane keep assist (LKA)
- Oncoming lane mitigation
- Park assist (Front, rear, and side parking)
- Rear collision warning and avoidance
- Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
- Emergency stop assist
- Door opening warning (DOW)
Four exterior colours for the ES90 are available in Malaysia. They are: Vapour Grey, Crystal White, Denim Blue and Onyx Black. The Volvo ES90 is priced at RM339,800 in Malaysia. Included in the price is a standard five-year unlimited mileage warranty, eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty, five-year complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance, as well as a five-year complimentary Google services and connectivity package.
To celebrate the launch, VCM is providing an exclusive 2% early bird incentive for the first 100 Volvo ES90 units booked in Malaysia by 31st March 2026. Additionally, an 8% incentive is available for fleet purchases.
