We’ve seen it before: sports cars and supercars given the off-road treatment simply because companies can. From the Porsche 911 Dakar to the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, these (largely) impractical but wildly desirable machines prove that sometimes it’s not all about laptimes, but pure giggles. The catch? They’re rare, expensive, and out of reach for most. Enter the Kuhl Outroad Toyota GR86 — an off-road-inspired take on Toyota’s much-loved sports coupe that brings the same rebellious spirit – at a far more relatable price point.
As the name suggests, this off-road-inspired Toyota GR86 isn’t a factory Toyota special. Instead, it’s the work of Kuhl — a Japanese tuning house and custom car builder with history in the drifting scene, driven by a desire to “share the joy of controlling a car at will with more people.”
As noise and environmental regulations continue to tighten, though, Kuhl was forced to innovate while still staying true to the company’s philosophy. The solution? Take the fun off-road. That idea ultimately gave rise to its rally-inspired conversion, officially known as the Kuhl Outroad package for the GR86.
Based on the RC variant of the Toyota GR86, the package comes standard with redesigned front and rear bumpers, wider side fenders, and functional side steps. Buyers can go further with optional extras such as a steel roof carrier, front and rear steel protectors, a racing bonnet, 18-inch Verz-Wheels Nexus NEX02 wheels and more.

Beneath the bodywork are notable chassis upgrades, including a set of Kuhl Racing coilovers that raise the ride height by 7.6 cm (three inches). For those who want even more ground clearance, a hydraulic lifter is available, adding a further 40 mm when needed. Braking performance has also been improved, with larger discs paired with six-pot callipers up front and four-pot callipers at the rear.
As stock, the Toyota GR86 makes 237 hp and 250 Nm of torque from its 2.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-four engine. To give this off-road version more kick, the car is also optionally available with a bolt-on turbo kit that increases power by roughly 50 hp, boosting power outputs to nearly 300 hp to the rear wheels via its six-speed manual transmission.

The base price of the Kuhl Outroad Toyota GR86 starts from JPY4,150,000 (approx. RM108k). It is not outrageously more expensive than the Base GR86 in Japan, which ranges from JPY2,936,000 (approx. RM76k) for the base GR86 RC with a six-speed manual transmission, to JPY3,616,000 (approx. RM94k) for the flagship RZ with a six-speed automatic transmission.
However, ticking all the boxes for the optional extras, especially the bolt-on turbo kit, quickly changes the picture. What starts as a relatively affordable, fun car can balloon to nearly the price of a brand-new Toyota GR Supra in Japan, with the total coming in at a staggering JPY7,372,300 (approx. RM191k). While the base conversion is already pretty sick, how far you take the “off-road” theme ultimately comes down to how much you’re willing to spend.
