Riding on the success of the Jaecoo J7, Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia is now looking to build further momentum with the Jaecoo J5, a new B-segment SUV that draws heavy inspiration from the Range Rover Evoque. While it may look the part, the Jaecoo J5 promises to offer much more than just British-inspired design.
Placed side by side, the Jaecoo J5 and Range Rover Evoque share strikingly similar proportions. Both feature short overhangs, a strong beltline running from the bonnet to the taillights, and a gently sloping roofline. The resemblance is most evident at the rear, where the J5 mirrors the slim rear windscreen and narrow taillights of the Evoque, linked by a black trim bar.
Inside, the Jaecoo J5 adopts a similarly minimalist design philosophy as the Range Rover, albeit with a distinct Chinese flair. It features an 8.8-inch letterbox-style digital instrument cluster, complemented by a large 13.2-inch central infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The centre console reflects familiar Chinese-market priorities, featuring a dual-layer layout with USB charging ports, a wireless charging pad and generous storage spaces.
Powering the Jaeceoo J5 in Malaysia is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 147 hp (108 kW) and 210 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels only via a CVT gearbox. While it may not excite, its performance is more than adequate for most drivers, whether cruising on the highway or zipping around the city.
Behind the wheel, the Jaecoo J5 proves to be a reliable and comfortable daily cruiser. Double-glazed windows, soft faux-leather seats, and a high seating position combine to create a relaxed driving experience. The centre infotainment screen is also intuitive on the move, with handy shortcuts that provide quick access to essential functions like air conditioning and media controls.

On the safety front, the Jaecoo J5 impresses with its Level 2.5 advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), which includes features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation, and low-speed follow. For added convenience, it also comes equipped with a 540-degree surround-view camera that includes an under-floor display.
Estimated to start from RM120,000, bookings for the Jaecoo J5 are now open with a RM1,000 reservation fee. Official pricing will be revealed at the car’s upcoming launch, so stay tuned for the full details when it arrives in Malaysia.
