The BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pickup truck (known as the Shark in the UK) has officially launched in the UK. This makes Britain the sixth right-hand-drive market to receive the truck, following Australia and New Zealand in late 2024, South Africa in April 2025, and Brunei and Pakistan in mid-2025.
The UK’s BYD Shark 6 is pretty much identical to the RHD model previewed in Malaysia at the BYD Tech Discovery event last year. It features C-shaped LED light signatures connected by front and rear light bars, along with a rugged, muscular design accentuated by squared-off wheel arches and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.
Inside, it features the same letterbox-style 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, paired with BYD’s signature rotating 15.6-inch central touchscreen. The cabin adopts a more rugged theme, with squared-off air-con vents, additional physical buttons on the centre console and steering wheel for off-road functions, and red stitching throughout. Notable creature comforts include a 50-watt wireless charger, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, and a 360-degree camera.
Power comes from BYD’s DMO system, an off-road-tuned version of the brand’s DM-i plug-in hybrid architecture. Underneath the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that mostly works as a generator for a 32.2kWh Blade battery, slightly larger than the one shown in Malaysia. This supplies power to two electric motors for a combined system output of 436hp and 650Nm, enough to get the Shark 6 from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and on to a 180km/h top speed.
The BYD Shark 6 boasts an EV-only range of 55.9 miles (90km) on the WLTP cycle — enough for most urban trips to be completed on electric power alone, which should prove handy for drivers navigating the UK’s low-emission zones, where non-compliant vehicles are charged a daily fee to enter. With the engine assisting, combined range extends to 419 miles (674km).
Charging is rated at 11kW AC, taking the battery from 15-100% in 3.2 hours, or up to 55kW DC, which tops up from 30-80% in 21 minutes. There’s also 6.6kW of Vehicle-to-Load support, letting the truck power tools or appliances directly from its battery.

The Shark 6 arrives with BYD’s full suite of advanced driver assistance systems as standard. This includes adaptive cruise control, front and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, forward and rear collision warning, and lane departure assistance with emergency lane-keeping.
The BYD Shark 6 is priced on the road (OTR) from GBP47,290 (approx. RM259k) in the UK. This undercuts the most premium Stormtrak variant of the Ford Ranger PHEV in the UK, which is priced at GBP51,130 (approx. RM280k).

BYD Malaysia Managing Director Eagle Zhao confirmed last year, during the BYD Tech Discovery event, that the Shark 6 was undergoing a local feasibility study rather than a firm launch commitment. While several RHD markets have already received the Shark 6, the company is taking a more cautious approach in Malaysia given the CKD commitment likely needed to keep the model competitive.
The Shark 6 has seen strong demand in several other right-hand-drive markets, such as Australia, South Africa and Brunei. If it’s introduced here in Malaysia, the Shark 6 would mark BYD’s first model here with a combustion engine.
