MG Malaysia announces CKD plant in Melaka – operations to begin in Q1 2026 as brand’s ASEAN hub

SAIC Motor Malaysia has announced its local assembly (CKD) plans for the MG marque here on our shores. The company has enlisted the services of EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) as the British-Sino marque’s manufacturing partner here in Malaysia, with production to be carried out at the EPMB assembly plant in Pegoh, Melaka.

Speaking at a press conference today, SAIC Motor Malaysia Managing Director Emory Qi said that CKD operations for MG will official begin in Q1 2026, with pilot production scheduled for December this year.

The new production plant in Malaysia will also serve as MG’s ASEAN hub, with vehicles produced here set to be exported to neighbouring countries within the region.

Beyond vehicle assembly, Qi also said that the CKD investment will also create jobs, strengthen the local vendor ecosystem, and “lay the groundwork for future R&D development in Malaysia”.

According to EPMB Executive Chairman, Hamidon Abdullah, kicking off MG’s CKD plans here in Malaysia will be the MG S5 EV, which will mark the first EV to be assembled at EPMB’s Melaka assembly facility.

The plant currently manufactures the GWM Haval H6 for Malaysia, and has previously signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BAIC International Development to manufacture the BAIC X55 II and BJ40 Plus SUVs here in Malaysia.

“Through collaboration with local suppliers, we will accelerate localisation, including battery pack assembly for MG vehicles, enhancing our value proposition and better serving the Malaysian market,” he added.

Aside from EVs, SAIC Motor Malaysia revealed that the production plant is also ready to produce internal combustion engine and hybrid models.

The MG Motor line-up in Malaysia currently consists of five models, including the aforementioned S5 EV SUV, the MG4 EV hatchback, MG HS SUV, MG5 sedan, and the MG ZS EV SUV.

“Our assembly line will fully meet customer demand, ensuring a smoother and faster ownership experience,” Qi said. “Most importantly, quality is non-negotiable. Every locally assembled vehicle will undergo stringent global-level inspections through SAIC’s Quality Sustenance Programme.”

“Today’s announcement is only the beginning. Together with our partners and local talent, we are building a future where innovation, sustainability, and opportunity drive Malaysia forward with MG,” he concluded.
