Even after the launch of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV and J8 this year, it seems Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia are not slowing down just yet. The company has just announced the Omoda Jaecoo Carnival, happening from August 21 to 24 at Desa Park City. However, eagle-eyed fans might notice two new models in the promotional poster, namely the Jaecoo J5 and Omoda C9 PHEV, which will be making their first public debut in Malaysia.
Previewed last year in China, the Jaecoo J5 is the smaller and more affordable sibling to the Jaecoo J7. The car measures 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, placing it in the B-segment SUV category and competing with models like the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V.
The Jaecoo J5 adopts many of the styling cues from the J7, creating this Range-Rover-esque feel with straight and bold body lines. Inside, the design is largely carried over from its larger J7 sibling. It features a 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment display and an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and sports four-spoke multi-function steering wheel with a design that mimics a two-spoke layout.
The Jaecoo J5 is available as both ICE and EV overseas, but the Malaysian J5 is likely going to inherit the same 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the J7. It produces 194 hp and 290 Nm of torque, with power going to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Omoda C9 PHEV meanwhile, as the name suggests, will be the plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the C9 that we’ve had for almost a year now. It will be powered by a similar powertrain to the J7 Super Hybrid System (SHS), housing the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The C9 PHEV will also feature three electric motors and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (3DHT).
In South Africa, where the Omoda C9 PHEV has already been launched, it delivers a combined system output of 590 hp and 915 Nm of torque. It’s equipped with a 34.46 kWh battery, offering an electric-only range of 22.7 km (WLTC). Paired with its petrol engine, Omoda Jaecoo claims that it’ll travel for up to 1,100 km in a single tank of fuel and a full battery.

Charging-wise, the C9 PHEV supports up to 6.6 kW AC charging, taking 5.5 hours to go from 30% to 100%. It also supports 70 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 30% to 80% top-up in just 25 minutes.
Prices for the Jaecoo J5 and Omoda C9 PHEV have yet to be announced. However, based on the pricing of their sibling models, the Jaecoo J5 is expected to start just above the RM100,000 mark, while the Omoda C9 PHEV will likely be priced closer to RM200,000 — given that the range-topping Omoda C9 AWD already starts from RM188,800.
