Jaecoo J5 EV launched in Indonesia at GIIAS 2025 – pet-friendly crossover with 470 km range

The Jaecoo J5 EV is now available in Indonesia, with the fully electric crossover making its debut at the 2025 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). This follows the J5 EV’s global unveiling earlier this year at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2025.

As reported by AutonetMagz, the Jaecoo J5 EV is priced from IDR350 million (approx. RM90k) to IDR450 million (approx. RM116k) in the Archipelago, and will be offered there in two variants.

As an EV, the Jaecoo J5 EV forgoes a traditional front grille for the typical grille-less EV look. The “Jaecoo” typeface is now located behind a transparent trim piece that stretches between the headlights. Differentiating it further from its regular ICE-powered sibling, the front bumper also gets a redesign, now featuring a unique perforated design and a subtle “BEV” emblem.

Aside from the different front-end design, the dimensions of the Jaecoo J5 EV are identical to its petrol-powered sibling, measuring 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, which positions it as a B-segment crossover. Compared to the BYD Atto 2 in the same segment, the J5 EV is slightly longer and wider, but shorter in height, while sharing an identical wheelbase.

Powering the Jaecoo J5 EV is a front-mounted electric motor that delivers 211 hp (155 kW) and 288 Nm of torque, which enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds. The motor is powered by a 60.9 kWh battery pack that provides a range of 470 km (NEDC), although no charging specifications were announced.

Like the exterior, the Jaecoo J5 EV also retains the same interior as its petrol-powered sibling. It shares the same central 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment display and 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster. Also carried over is the four-spoke multi-function steering wheel, which, due to its design, creates the illusion of a two-spoke wheel.

While Jaecoo Indonesia did not reveal further interior specifications for the J5 EV, we presume it should also come with the model’s signature pet-friendly features. This would include the extended seats, a special filtration and antibacterial system to handle fur and odours, and a climate control system that can regulate the cabin temperature for pets—a system that sounds functionally similar to Tesla’s well-known “Dog Mode.”

Closer to home, Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek, previously confirmed that the dinosaur juice-powered Jaecoo J5 could make its Malaysian debut by the fourth quarter of 2025 as a locally assembled (CKD) model.

Here, it swaps out the battery pack and electric motor for a 1.6-litre turbocharged straight-four that produces 194 hp and 290 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It is available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations.

While the petrol J5 is confirmed, it is not yet certain if the company has plans to bring the J5 EV to Malaysia. If it does launch here, it would be the first EV under Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia’s portfolio and would compete against its cousin, the Chery Omoda E5, priced at RM146,808.

However, with the ongoing stiff competition in the EV segment, the bigger question is pricing. Could the Jaecoo J5 EV be priced competitively against rivals like the BYD Atto 2 with its RM100,000 price tag?
