Jaecoo J5 makes UK debut and takes on Goodwood hill climb

Omoda Jaecoo has debuted the all-new Jaecoo J5 in the United Kingdom — where it will be known as the Jaecoo 5 — with an appearance at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which included taking on the event’s coveted hill climb.

This debut follows the marque’s official UK launch in January 2025, which was marked by the introduction of the Jaecoo 7, known to Malaysians as the Jaecoo J7.

For the UK market, the Jaecoo J5 will be offered in two variants, Pure and Luxury. Both variants are powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged straight-four that produces 194 hp and 290 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations are available for the J5 globally, the company has not revealed which drivetrain will be offered for the SUV in the UK.

An all-electric (EV) version of the Jaecoo J5 is available, the company has not confirmed the EV version for the UK market at this time either. On that, it’s powered by a 211 hp (155 kW) and 288 Nm front-mounted electric motor, paired to a 60.9 kWh battery pack, enabling a range of 470 km (NEDC).

Dimension-wise, the J5 measures 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase. To put that into perspective against its cousin, the Chery Omoda 5. The Jaecoo J5 is shorter in length, yet it is both wider and taller. Futhermore, the J5 has a slightly shorter wheelbase than the Omoda 5.

The design of the Jaecoo J5 resembles a scaled-down J7, featuring a similar Land Rover-esque exterior but with conventional door handles instead of the flush-fitting ones on its larger sibling.

Inside, the J5’s dashboard features a portrait-oriented 13.2-inch infotainment display and a digital instrument cluster. The vehicle is aimed at outdoorsy youths, with a host of practical features for adventurous trips, including a 75 kg roof rack, camping lights, and a 480 litre boot that expands to 1,180 litres.

Furthermore, pet lovers will appreciate several unique features designed for their furry friends. The interior includes extended seats for comfort and safety, a climate control system that can regulate temperature for pets, and a special filtration and antibacterial system to handle fur and odours. Taking a step further on the pet-friendly concept of the Jaecoo J5, the company will even offer accessories like boarding steps and custom-fit feeding bowls.

We previously reported that the Jaecoo J5 will be launched in Malaysia, confirmed by Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek. According to the original timeline, the J5 could debut in Malaysia by the fourth quarter of 2025 and could potentially be a locally assembled (CKD) model.

While Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia has not revealed more details about the J5’s local launch, the company is currently gearing up to launch the Jaecoo J8 on 18 July 2025. It is likely that the debut of the J5 will follow the launch of the J8, but we will have to wait and see.
